Tough day at the range........

Post by fortyshooter » Wed Apr 22, 2020 5:32 pm

Had a simple task to do today and that was to get some speed readings off my 230 gr. 45 Colt Cowboy Action loads.
Bullet is a 230 gr. Speer swaged lead bullet loaded over 7.6 - 7.8 gr. of Unique.
According to my Speer book this is a start load for a 230 gr. lead bullet and should give 809 FPS or so. I was looking for 780-820 FPS
from my Ruger New Vaquero with 5.5 inch barrel.

Nice blue sky day but my old Chrony F1 did not want to function. Changed shooting directions with regards to sun angle with and without the shades
and after 15 shots nothing but "ERROR".
Well I had enough of that crap and put an end to it. I don't know what the speed is but two 230 gr. 45 slugs were enough to send that ol' Chrony
back to Jesus! Sorry for the battery that took a direct hit!

These loads are for my new Remington 1858 revolver when it gets here. They specify loads no faster than 850 FPS or a Max of 12,000 PSI.
They still had a bit of kick but hopefully in the safe range I need.

Now time to search for a better type chrony that isn't so picky with running!

Seems to be an accurate load! . Those in-expensive chronys tend to get a bit shakey late in life. forty, any idea what one you may look at?

Yeah what to do with a loaded .45 in your hand and a malfunctioning chrony! :D

Tom...I am looking at what is new in these things and have seen a couple that use a technology other than optical.
Magneto I think is one. Think I'm done with the opticals.https://www.amazon.com/Magnetospeed-Spo ... s-chron-20

Have to do more research to see if it will work on revolvers too.

They should have included sun screens with your Chrony...if you had put a "shade" over the chrony, all would have been OK...just sayin'..BobG in VA

as noted in this thread ===> http://henryrifleforums.com/viewtopic.p ... aph#p44708 , I used a Chrony for many years and got its cost per use down to next to nothing .... it was a tough critter, was grazed a few times and survived .... eventually it died and we replaced it with a Caldwell Ballistic Precision Chronograph ====> https://www.amazon.com/Caldwell-720001- ... 145&sr=1-2 .... while its not fancy, it does have more features than I know how to use .... for me, price was a consideration .... so far, we are well pleased with it

It came with shades and they were used to no effect. After 8 yrs. of use it was getting unreliable as in sometimes it would work and sometimes not and most often the times you really wanted some test results it would fail. I got my moneys worth out of it.
Best chances of it working were on bright overcast days with no shades up.
