Eye Sight Going Kaput

Post by Shakey Jake » Wed Apr 15, 2020 5:57 pm

I'm feeling really bummed out. My retinal vein occlusion has gotten really bad in my right eye the past few weeks. I couldn't even see the letters on the eye chart (when covering up my left eye) across the room at the doctors to get my monthly injections today. The letters were just a blur. He told me there was a lot of swelling in the back of my right eye but didn't offer a response to it so I let it go. I'm afraid my shooting of long guns is going to have to come to an end and I really hate that. I don't know if I could learn to shoot as a lefty. I'll probably be selling my long guns if this doesn't improve by year's end. This condition has all come on since last July. I was hoping it would get better but it hasn't. I really hope that I don't go blind in that eye but maybe I can still find pleasure in shooting pistols at close range. There's no cure for this......just treatment. I'm also concerned about my work. It's hard to so those small parts on flutes and piccolos to work on them. I've been wearing one of those magnification visors. Getting older really sucks. Now for the good news.....there's a 1.75 m bottle of Dewar's sitting on the bar that I'll be partaking from this evening. Maybe it will get me in a better frame of mind.

Jake, in my sixty-nine years of experience, I've learned that life is not fair and getting older really does suck. I hope you can find some peace ahead.

Really sorry to hear this, Jake. Just like to mention that if it comes to shooting handguns, only, there are specialty handguns for shooting way, way out there, right there with rifles. Be glad to help on that one, if needed. Hope it doesn't come to that for you, though.

Jake, I have/had a condition called uveitis, which is internal swelling/inflation of the eyeball, which can cause blindness. It is treated by either a steroid injection into the eye socket or prednisone drops to the affected eye or eyes to control the inflammation. I hope there is such a treatment for you. My condition has been dormant for years now.

Hang in there Jake and don’t give up on shooting left handed. I’m a lefty and when my left eye went bad I learned to shoot right handed. It was very awkward at first but I was surprised at how fast it became normal.

I'll try some lefty shooting next time at the range SJ, allow me to step up & embarrass myself in a blaze of uncoordinated shooting glory...

Jake, I hate to hear of your sight issue. As Sir Henry noted, try shooting lefty. I had rotator cuff surgery on my right & I'm right handed. Tried shooting with my left ( one handed ) & found out I could do just as well that way. So, don't get discouraged, experiment a bit & see how it goes. You may surprise yourself.
Hang tough, pard.

Texans being born cowboy tough doesn't hurt any either. Lots of support here by the looks of it.

Sorry to hear it.
Maybe not the same cause, but Claritin has helped me with eyeball swelling and 3x reader glasses in front of my progressive lens helps some with detail work.

THIS!! I’m actually right handed but when I was a kid with a 760 pump and having launched thousands of pellets I found that my strong arm forward held the rifle steadier. Shot left handed for the next 40+ years. Enter the eye doc. A couple months after that - shooting right handed. Not as hard as you think.

Now to the important stuff - me and mine send send respects and well wishes to you. Like your Dewars, a little age might make the label fade, but what’s inside just keeps getting better.

Sorry to hear about your troubles Jake. That's a tough pill to swallow. You will adjust to this. Don't sell off your long guns just yet. Give it time, and play around on the range until you get comfortable. Just shooting them guns will be your therapy.
I have lost most of the feeling in my finger tips. It sucks, but im learning different ways to pick things up, and you will learn also.
Keep your head up, and push through this.

In the Military practical pistol, carbine, and shotgun courses we trained with strong and weak side eye shooting. It was crazy at 1st, but you eventually hit center mass. I'm sure you'll get er done.
