CPAP machines

Post by dave77 » Wed Apr 15, 2020 2:54 pm

Anyone here using one? I get mine next week and am not looking forward to it.

Had no idea I had sleep apnea but my doctor wanted me tested before my leg surgery since I will need total anesthesia. The sleep doctor told me I have severe sleep apnea, said I was stopping breathing as many as 60 times a hour and that my blood oxygen level was going as low as 75%.

I suppose it will help me out a lot, I always assumed my fatigue was due to my COPD.

I've been on one for 13 years .... sleeping in one takes some adjustment .... I can't handle a mask but have adjusted to using what the call "nose pillows" .... there are several threads with info about Sleep Apnea that have some good info .... it is nothing to play with ... I learned that the hard way .... a few years ago when I came down with the flu having Sleep Apnea put me in cardiac intensive care ....

I've been using one for the past 11 years. I had to have my machine replaced about two months ago and lived without it for about six weeks because of a vendor that dropped the ball. I am so glad to have it again. I use a full face mask and wearing it is oddly comforting to me when I go to bed. You will get used to it and you will feel soooo much better when you actually get some sleep. Good luck.

I doubt I'd be able to use the nose pillows as I'm a mouth breather, will see what they say when I pick up the machine. I really need to use it, doctor said that without it my chances of a heart attack double and chances of a stroke triple. :o :(

I recently was put on one. I've used it for about 3 weeks or so. I wasn't looking forward to it much either, but it has been a much easier experience than I guessed it would be. Still take it off once or twice a night, but get it back on pretty quick usually. Really starting to notice a difference, and my snoring doesn't keep the wife in the guest bed anymore. We're both getting better sleep.

I had one. Fought it for 2 years trying to sleep and couldn't get used to it. Found that eucalyptus oil in an overhead diffuser on the bed head board took care of it.

Been using it for a couple of weeks now, don't like it but can live with it. I've found I have to be very sleepy before putting it on or I'll just lay there listening to it for quite awhile before going to sleep. According to the machine I only quit breathing a couple of times an hour now compared to up to 60 times an hour from my sleep study. They say someone without sleep apnea can quit breathing up to 5 times an hour.

interesting, I've never owned a machine that could provide that type of info

I have a ResMed Airsense 10 that regularly connects to a server via a LTE modem. The machine itself does not provide that kind of information, but I wonder if I could get the data using their app, which I didn't bother to set up. What model is yours? Do you get the info from the app or the machine?

You can put an app on you phone, or go to the website. myAir is the name of the app, https://myair.resmed.com/ is the website. The info is interesting to follow. I don't exactly remember how I linked it, but it was pretty easy. You can call your medical equipment place and I am sure they will help you.

Thanks, Pudsky. I do have all the info I need to set it up; I just haven't done it and didn't know what data was available. I'll consider it. I was told when I got the machine that my Dr. has online access to it, too, and can make needed adjustments remotely.

It's a Philips Dream Station Auto CPAP. There is an bluetooth app available which I haven't gotten around to getting yet but the machine itself shows me - Therapy hours, AHI (my average so far is 1.7), Mask Fit, Periodic Breathing and 90% Pressure.

Also has Auto-Adjusting Pressure, the doctor has them set the initial range which he can also change with the LTE connection. My is set to start out at 5 and goes to somewhere around 15 but it's usually around 10 to 12 when I wake up.

It also has an adjustable humidifier which is nice, without it I would usually wake up with a very dry mouth and throat. Also has an optional heated hose so when temps are lower you can adjust to keep condensation from occurring in the hose.

Medicare and my supplemental insurance should cover all the costs. They have a schedule for replacing the mask, head gear, hose and filters which is pretty much automatic but being Medicare they do have to call and ask a few questions before shipping them.

I use a CPAP machine and have been so for about three years. It all started when I noticed my wife really gasped and snored when she was asleep ao she had the test done and really needed one. Then one nioght she noticed I would stop breathing once in a while so I then had the test and found out I was worse that her so now we both have one. It took me a long time to get used to it as I would wake up with a cotton mouth. Eventually I got a humidifier and now have no problem most nights. You have to find which mask works best for you than everything should be better. The heated hose works great.

UPDATE :

my 4th CPAP machine arrived Wednesday .... it is a ResMed AirSense 10 ====> https://www.resmed.com/en-us/sleep-apne ... rsense-10/ .... its without a doubt its technology is the most most advance of any of the others .... as has been the case, its also the smallest machine I've had .... the first was larger than a standard typewriter .... after unboxing it I quickly realized that there was no way to connect it to our SoClean machine .... a few minutes research determined that I needed to order a different lid for the water chamber .... would you believe that Amazon used the USPS to deliver one in less than 48 hours .. :o .. I sure wouldn't have predicted that .... after using it for 2 nights, it does appear to be a well made machine

Let us know what you think of it. I've been using mine for almost a year now and still hate it. Have to be really sleepy before putting the mask on or I will have hard time going to sleep. Also I wake up a couple of times a night and when I put my mask back on the pressure has build up enough that I have a issue with exhaling, have to restart it to lower the pressure setting. Just had a video appt. with my sleep doctor and he wants me to do the full night all hooked up at the sleep place, really looking forward to that . Just had the at home test before.

I've had one for over 15 years, the first one was sooo noisy that it sounded like Darth Vader was in the room. On my third machine and can't sleep without it, Res med 10, nice machine, small, QUIET & all kind of features. My SA was so bad that the people in the test facility woke me up after 2 1/2 hours to put me on the machine, they were scared that I wouldn't make it thru the night.

way back when I had the full night sleep study, they woke me up after only a couple of hours and told me they had to get me on a machine .... they hooked me up using a hard mask and that didn't last but a few minutes ..... they then switched to what they call Nasal Pillows .... it did take a bit of adjustment but that style works for me ....

understood on all counts .... as noted above, I didn't make it long before they woke me up and put me on a machine .... AirSense 10 does seem to be a good machine

I have to wear a mask because I'm a mouth breather, I guess if I was to use a nasal only type I'd have to wear a strap to keep my mouth shut.

The sleep lab was shut down for quite a while because of the covid. Doctor said it would be at least 3 months before I can get an appointment.
