Why I CCW in my "safe" neighborhood....

Tennessee has two types of carry now, recently changed law.
The "enhanced" permit, which is the same as the old open/concealed carry permit ( like mine ). The "new" type, is for open carry
only, & can be obtained via internet ( not really fond of this ). It does have restrictions, too numerous to mention, or remember.
As Moe said, we can carry pretty much as we please. TN is a fairly gun friendly state.

When I started carrying I lived in rough neighborhood in So. Cal. My usual dress was shorts and a tee shirt. My Shield fit in the small of my back and is invisible. Now that I live in a smaaall town in Kansas it sometimes seems silly but bad things can happen anywhere. Meth heads don't know this is a safe place. I am like dasmoeturhead my 1911 goes with me sometimes in the winter.

I carry the SIG P220 .45 as long as the weather allows, and the Smith M&P 340 Scandium 357 hammerless when it's too hot for the SIG. I will often put extra mags for the Sig in the truck on trips. If Miss T and I are on vacation, we are both carrying snubbies, or both carrying Glock 23s, so our reloads interchange. Spare mags in all four door pockets will work for either of us with the Glocks... And... The Glock 27 backup, will use the mags from the 23s.

I should have clarified. I do carry concealed when I'm in the general public, and mostly open on my property. I think open carry in the public is just asking for trouble. As a Maritime LE Boarding Officer I have been trained extensively in gun retention, but I really don't want to be rolling around on the floor of Wally world with a meth head trying to secure my weapon. If my gun prints a bit that's ok. I don't think very many people are looking at me that close.

Gene, it would be better than the current setup. Amazes me that as "guarded" as the state Legislature is on some 2A laws, they went thru with this & the Gov signed it.
However, they're still balking ( so far ) , on Constitutional carry ( no permit required at all ).

Washington State is a “shall issue” state meaning that if a resident applies and passes the background check including being finger printed the state HAS to issue you a permit. No range time required. I have a Washington permit.

Idaho has what’s called an Enhanced Permit which allows carry in 38 states. The Enhanced Permit requires a classroom instruction including both a certified instructor and confirmation by a law enforcement officer. Also this permit requires 100 rounds of range time. I also have this permit as we plan to do a lot of traveling if the country ever open up again. To get the Idaho permit a non-resident is required to have a permit from their home state.

That being said, I live in a rural community of 10 acre parcels and we have a gate at the entrance. (Gate will stop a vehicle but not a pedestrian) Even so, I feel safe on my property and don’t carry a gun while working around the place. HOWEVER, without exception if I leave the gate or go for a walk in the undeveloped areas of my community I always carry a firearm. No exception!

My two go to carries are a Ruger LCRX in .327 Fed Mag or a S&W Shield in 9mm. Both are loaded with Federal Hydro-Skoks and as you can see in the pic I carry back up ammo. I keep both loaded in my night stand and grabbing one or the other is quick, simple and automatic. (No kids at home and when the out of state grandkids visit both are placed in a lock box in the drawer)

Va. requires a Gun Safety course on how to handle a firearm. No actual target practice required. Several gun shops /ranges around have their own
training and shooting courses you can take to get your certificate which you send in with application.

I taught a private ccw course here in va for years. I limited my courses to no more than four students at one time and the class was eight hours in length. We spent four hours in classroom in the morning, then four hours on the range. Most of my private students were either family members of fellow LE Officers, or professionals. Nurses, Mental Health Professionals, Probation or Parole Officers, Real Estate Agents etc.

When I retired, I stopped teaching the classes.

I specify the private course, as I also taught the professional course in the academy, and the refresher courses prior to requal. (Something I introduced when I first started as a Staff Instructor with the department all those years ago.) Prior to that, the officers came to the range, shot the old carry ammo down range to warm up, the fired the requalification course for score. They were then issued new carry ammo.

I introduced teaching some refresher material, or new update material. Then using the old duty ammo plus practice ammo to fire 100 rounds of practice, by learning the new info or shooting drills. Then shooting requal. Scores improved dramatically.
