Best shot of the week

I probably used all my luck for this week. Thursday I was siting out back on the porch looking through my sight box for some longer screws for a mounting plate. A guy saw my 4-wheeler in the yard and stopped and walked around back and asked if it was for sale. I said "not right now but maybe later this summer". He sat down and talked a while and we got on the gun subject as my 513T Remington was leaning against the door jam. One thing lead to another and he asked about the accuracy of the old rifles like that one. I said "they are very good if the bores have been taken care of". He then asked if I ever split a bullet on a axe blade. I told him no but I did shoot the blade off a guys Buck lite knife one day he bet I couldn't hit it. He then got mad that I broke his knife. I said "you shouldn't have put it up there in the first place." So this guy said his uncle could split bullets on a axe blade at 20 yds. I said "every shot" and he said "no but once in a while he could do it". So I just had to try it while he was there but I used two old butter knives from my junk drawer taped to a piece of card board. I then told him I would need a couple shots at the 22 yd. target board at the knife blade to make sure it was dead center on the target. He said "are you going to use open sights"? I said "these are peep sights". I shot two shots that hit right on the right side of the blade. I moved it two clicks left as it don't move much at that distance. The next shot it scraped the edge of the blade with a lead mark. One more click left and the next shot hit the blade and split the bullet but still favored the right. So another left click and on to the next knife and it cut the bullet pretty well centered. Then he said he had to go he had seen enough to make him a believer that old guns do shoot well. The right target was the second knife I shot at. I figure I used all my luck up so I went back to what I was doing. The old Remington came through and made me look good.

Yup, older guns are often good ones, and if cared for, still work well.

I might try that one day just for the fun of it. Don't believe I can see the edge of the card at 22 yds. Maybe have to use some "cheater" lines on each side if using the peep sighted Remington or close the distance some.

Wow! Very nice shooting. I could have hit the card board probably 4 out of 5 times, but the knife, nah, way too good me me. Thanks for the post. Nothing like being humiliated first thing in the morning! lol
