H45 Barn heater

Last fall a customer of mine gave me 265 gallons of fuel oil and the barrel to boot... I parked it in my barn, but what to do with it??
Well, I found an H-45 Army surplus tent heater 'new in the box' online. These heaters will burn gasoline, jet fuel, fuel-oil, or wood. So, I ordered one up and it was promptly delivered from North Carolina. And yes it was 'new in the box'. But, it was packed in that box in 1993! All of the accessories were there (even the stove pipe and cap). Except that I have to make my own wood grate if I ever go that route. The only issue was that the fuel control valve would not allow any flow, (having been never used and sitting for 27 years) I tried a number of things to get it to work to no avail. But, the army surplus company immediately sent me a 'new' valve and that worked perfectly. So, I tested the stove outside tonight and it worked just like I hoped it would, and man it really throws the heat. Gonna, have a toasty barn next winter!

The barrel contains #2 fuel oil.... Once it is going it seems to burn pretty clean.

Yes sir! especially hot, strong, black coffee in the morning.... With grounds to chew on... That's my kind of coffee! (My wife likes the hipster stuff)

is it drip fed

Yes.. So it is always maintaining a certain level in a tube in the burn chamber. You add a cup of fuel to the burn chamber, light a rag-paper and poke it in.. That gets your initial prime of fuel going which vaporizes the fuel in the tube. As that fuel boils and burns off the control allows more fuel in.. The dark smoke rolls out the chimney until the main fire is established and then it clears up very nice. It has an overflow line (which is supposed to go into a bucket) incase the float sticks. No electricity needed. Much like the old Siegler oil space heaters.

Come sit in the barn for a spell the next time you're in Northern Minnesota! My wife and girls might even invite ya in the house for cookies (since you are an ambassador and everything!)

nice looking heat deflector .... it wouldn't take much in the way of insulation to make that a cozy room even in the worst of the winter in your area
