H001 gets another chance

Post by ditto1958 » Sat Jul 02, 2016 11:43 pm

Well, the H001 did pretty good at the range today. I'm happy about that.

To make what should be a short story unnecessarily long, I'd been frustrated with it for quite awhile. This is the same rifle that in 2013, in the depths of the .22 ammo shortage, was my "go to" .22 (it doesn't go through ammo as fast as a semi-auto does). Yet more recently I've found myself shooting it less and less. I just wasn't shooting well at all with the thing. I even tried it with a scope for a bit, but only got more upset, as I couldn't seem to zero it.

So, I put in in the back, to rest and collect dust and cobwebs.

Today, though, the H001 came out of "retirement" and followed me to the range. I was determined to really bear down. To concentrate on my sight picture. To pay attention to my breathing, and to get good let offs on the trigger. And you know what happened? It worked. The first tube full of ammo was rough. But then I settled down, and got serious. And started hitting.

The H001 is still harder for me to shoot well with than my Ruger 10/22. The sights on the Ruger are better, and the Ruger "seems" heavier and steadier than the Henry. Actually, they both weigh the same and are the same length. But the perception is that the Ruger is shorter, stubbier and heavier, while the Henry is slender and lighter.

Bottom line? A good day, and I was happy. But I really should look into getting better sights on my Henry.

I love mine in every way, but I only use the factory sights. I like to take it on hikes in the game lands and in the mountains. I used to carry my Golden Boy .22lr but the H001 is a bit lighter and that's one of the main reasons that I bought it. I have absolutely no complaints and love the accuracy, fit and finish and it cycles flawlessly. I paid $312 for it at my LGS. I was happy.

We all love our Henry's, but I hear little praise for the stock semi buckhorn sights. I don't use them on either of the Henry's in my stable. Lots of options out there from peep sights to fiber optic, to optical, to red dot.

I would have to say that I think I like the red dot on my BB the best. It looks a little funky, but works extremely well. Non magnifying, easy to focus with my not so young eyes. The only down side is that I have to make sure I have to turn off the sight at the end of the session. Batteries are cheap enough, and last a long, long time. However, leave the sight on for a couple days and there is no dot. I could undoubtedly get smaller groups at distance with a conventional magnified scope. Both my daughter and I tend to prefer the non magnified when shooting at our normal haunt, the indoor range around the corner from where we live. Max distance is 25 yds. Clovispup does very well at 15 yds unsupported. Dad is quite proud of the groups she manages like this. Much better than I can do.

Real semi-buckhorn sights, such as the ones on the Frontiers and Golden Boys, would be fine for me. The H001 has a front sight blade that's too wide, and the rear sight is similar to the ones that used to come on inexpensive .22 rifles back in the good old days.

I have kept the stock rear sight, but early on I put a Hiviz fiber optic front sight on it. This has been a big improvement. Still, a small brass bead would be even better.

Update: I have taken the H001 to the range two or three more times.

I guess I should have been more patient, and, even more important, more determined in the past. I am getting better with the trigger now, and have been getting some decent results. Still not as good as with the 10/22, but better than before.

Two words, Skinner Sights. I can't hit the broad side of a barn with the EOM sights. Most of mine have either scopes, Skinner Sights or Marbles/Lyman combinations. What ammo were you shooting? I've found HV is all over the place while SV is much better. I like the SV made in Germany like RWS and Norma.

I have. A Williams peep on the receiver and sat.
I will get a taller. Front sight installed
Then we will head to the range.

I shoot mostly at 100 yards. I find that SV rounds fall too much at that distance. HV shoots noticeably flatter, and I can hold right on the targets. I started another thread the other day on ammo, as I have discovered my rifle likes Mini-mag hollow points.
