Accurate #9 for heavy .357 Mag ?

Anyone try that powder with 180 gr. bullets? It is a similar powder to Alliant 2400.

Was looking at powder options since my local shop is still out of 2400 but it is on order.

Well if you have some laying around, then I would play around a bit, but
wouldn't just buy some hoping. Unless it will work for something you may have.
But it is good to know if a certain powder will get similar results for times when you run short and none is available.

Hopefully they will get restocked soon.

I haven't used it in .357, but I quite like the AA 5/7/9 series. It is spherical and meters exceptionally well, and I will continue to use them when they are available. I have used AA9 in moderate .480R loads, and plan to work up some .44 Mag loads soon, once I get my brand new X rifle back from Henry. I routinely use AA5 in 9mm Luger range ammo. (Well, I did when factory ammo was not so dirt cheap.)

It looks as if using AA9 over AA7 with a 180 gr cast bullet will give you about 100 fps extra (in a 6" barrel). Will you be loading for a rifle or revolver? Barrel length? If it is for a shorter revolver, AA7 might give better results with a smaller fireball... When I cut 5 inches off my SRH 7.5" barrel, I went to the faster AA7 and everything was better - higher MV, less flash, less recoil.

PS, I know nothing about the new AA11 FS, except that it is intended for personal defense carbines and has low flash. It might be worth checking out.

Using A2400 for light loads but for heavy loads H110 is what I used before.

I do not load .357 Mag, but I have been reloading .44 Mag (both revolver and Henry BBB) for a long time. When I bought my S&W Model 29 in 2002 I used a variety of powders and I got the best results using AA#9 with 240 gr Hornady XTP bullets. After buying the Henry .44 Mag BBB a few year ago I continued to use AA#9 with the same Hornady bullets. Accuracy results were OK at 75 yds. However, when I switched to Bear Tooth .250 gr hard cast bullets my 75 yd groups improved to 2'-3" groups. But, when I switched to the cast bullets I had simultaneously installed a Skinner Express rear peep and new front sight which contributed to the improved accuracy.

I use #9 for pistol loads. 2400 and 110 do a better job for my rifle loads.
