38-55 bullets

Post by larry7293 » Sat Mar 28, 2020 8:01 pm

Looking into reloading for the Henry 38-55. The bullet I am thinking of using is the MBC #1 Ballard. 245grn sized at .379 RNFP hard cast bullet. My Lyman cast book only shows reloading data for 249grn cast bullets. Could I use this data?
Also what powder would be best to use?
thanks

Ive not tried anything in the .379 range but mine likes a GC .377 lyman bullet from Montana cast bullets at .377 with Reloader 7. Some other guys on here have used various bullets from custom jacketed bullet people. Im sure if you do a search you will find them

Possibly .379 cast bullets are too large?

I would slug the bore of your gun. Mine shoots .377 very well.

Larry, before using the 379 I recommend two things. Contact Henry with model and serial number asking for for bore and groove of your weapon. I also recommend slugging your barrel. I personally load Vollmer precision 255gr. The lyman 50th has lost data.
