Side loading gate problems.

Post by MyretireChlo&Miss » Mon Mar 16, 2020 6:35 pm

I have a 35rem Henry side loading gate. When I try to load my reloads through the gate, they will not feed. I can load them in the tube and they will cycle perfectly. I have a box of hornady leverevolution and they load just fine. My 200gr rn will not feed even though I am within saami specs. I measured all aspects of my reloading practice. Just to make it clear,I am not a rookie reloader. I contacted Henry, and they told me not to use my feloads in my rifle. Anyone else have this problem.

FIrst welcome to the forum from Wickiup Junction, Oregon!

2nd - will FACTORY rounds cycle when loaded through the load gate?

IF they do then you need to look at your reloads for some anomaly that is causing this however if the FACTORY rounds are doing the same thing then it is most likely as issue with the gun.

Regardless:

This goes in one ear and out the other when I read/hear this about any firearm.

Try one LEVERevolution and then a reload?
Might tell you if it is the mag follower.

Henry will not entertain any thought of reloading. That has demonstrated before.

Thanks for the info, i'll try the leverevolution followed by my reloads, and I have not tried the 200gr rn commercial bullets yet because they are hard to find here in nothern Wisconsin. I might have to order some and pay the big shipping fees.

What type bullet are the reloads?
Like Tim said a ove could be the follower.
Henry always says to not use reloads.
I bought a 41 mag a few years ago and that is the only thing that it has seen.

I have the 38-55 - I did experience a feed issue, but it was related to how I held the weapon while cycling the lever. If I held the weapon to my shoulder in shooting position and cycle - intermittently it would Jam. If I lifted the muzzle up toward the sky and cycled all worked well. I went nuts. I measured oal, checked crimps, tore the weapon apart, cleaned everything. I loaded and crimped rounds, no powder. To test the cycle at home until I came up with an oal that cycled without issue.

I do. However, it was occurring with reloaded short brass and the long brass. Barnes and Vollmer projectiles.

The type of bullet is the hornady xtp. My brass is always trimmed to specs. This is the first Henry side load I own, my other Henry's have seen nothing but reloads,44mag,and 45-70 and they love them. The lawyers do all the talking for the gun companies,in my humble opinion. The 35 rem loves the reloads also, but they don't like to be loaded from the side. I guess I will have to do some more experimenting. Thanks to all who have responded.

Hey everyone,I figured out why my reloads would not load through the side loading gate on my Henry brass 35 rem. The top of my cases are hitting the loading tube. I pulled the tube out and they loaded just fine. My solution to the problem was to give the rounds a slightly heavier crimp. Thanks for all of your responses.

good to hear you figured it out .... do admit I'm trying to visualize how a heavier crimp would solve the problem

That makes sence.
Case mouth edge hitting an edge.
Better Crimp allows that edge to pass the loading tube mouth.
35rem cases are flared before seating a bullet, the case mouth is so delicate.
