I'm four weeks away from completing a two year college course (and running a ~95% average). I got an alert Friday eve that classes have been cancelled until the end of the semester. However, they are going to haphazardly put together an online 'alternative', and expect it to work...there goes my chances of making Dean's list. Technology is not my friend...I'd rather take my chances with 'the virus'.

Was at the grocery store Thursday. Well stocked except for Toilet paper. Had to go back today to get some allergy medicine. The place was gutted of most food stuffs, except for potato chips.
I observed the same thing. On Thursday I went to the small town I live nearby only grocery store and they had almost everything in stock except for hand sanitizer including TP and paper towels. Yesterday my wife wanted some yogurt for the pro biotic it contains as she has increased her vitamin intake so we went to the store. Amazing, it was gutted in just 48 hours. I believe this happened because in between my two trips our governor closed all schools state wide for six weeks. Fortunately we are always stocked up and a bit more so right now.

The guy at the checkout told us that on Friday the store’s sales set a new daily record by $80,000. Also he said they had a delivery Thursday night.

Same timing and results here. Thursday was fine except for sanitizers. Now all paper goods and water...gone.
I'm sure they will re-stock, but who wants to go out now?
I don't want to share the air with large numbers of shoppers.

Some "Duh" advice from TTAG:

https://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/time- ... the-house/

Time To Make Sure You Tool Up Every Time You Leave the House

My Saturday morning trip to the local Walmart yesterday almost felt like I was on the set of a dystopian movie. At least it wasn’t as bad as mid-day Thursday, when aisles loaded with frazzled shoppers looking for sold-out items made for a tension-filled experience.

As Tire and Lube Express changed my oil and rotated tires this morning, I surveyed the damage left by the plague throngs of shoppers from the previous couple of days. Frankly, I’d hoped the shelves had been restocked. They had not. Instead, they were more barren than earlier in the week.

With practically nobody there at the early hour, I had a chance to snap a couple of photos.

While I carry my safety rescue tool(s) everyday, I know more than a few of my fellow CCW license-holders who do not. I would gently encourage them to revisit their personal defense plan under current circumstances.

After all, we know how desperate people do desperate, irrational things.

And it’s not just here in America, either.

#BREAKING: A scuffle broke out at a Woolworths in Chullora this morning with patrons coming to blows over toilet paper, forcing employees to intervene. Bankstown police attended the scene and no charges have been laid. #9News pic.twitter.com/9TmDAStb9D

With that in mind, it’s time for wise and prudent people to tool up for self-defense. This is a good opportunity to load business magazines with business loads. For now, practice ammo goes into storage for another day as we minimize our exposure to other people.

Are we likely to need any of these self-defense guns and loaded magazines? Probably not. Thankfully.

Word from a family member who works at OHSU. It's recommended that people 60+ stay home and grocery shop online and discourage visits from younger family members including grand kids.

Some local input: I just got back from our local AFB - grocery run. About 3 times as many people there than usual for a Sunday. They were pretty well stocked as usual, except for rice - none of that. And still had some TP on the shelf, but it was going fast.

Gate guard said they are no longer allowed to touch your ID card, so you have to flip it over for them so they can scan it - probably DoD wide. Still carrying M4's and sidearms.

Not surprised. Every time the military bases have an emergency event of any kind, things tighten up. I haven't been to Ft. Campbell,KY lately, but likely they are doing the same.

I am really getting P.O. about this. Today my daughter told me that we can't see our grand kids because the CDC said that kids should avoid over 60 people. For how long, no one knows. I know she is trying to protect us but jeez.... This getting out of hand. This whole thing reminds me of a line from a Buffalo Springfield song from the 60's " Paranoia runs deep, into your heart it will creep" I am really bummed. :(

Interesting! Could it be true?

From a nurse:

Remember a month or so ago when people were complaining about being sick and couldn’t get rid of it for weeks? 🧐

Let's do some critical thinking. COVID-19 started emerging in early December. Given the incubation period, that means infection started in November, and given international travel and tourism rates, it DID NOT TAKE 3+ months for it to come here. It's been here.

I've had numerous friends across the country who've had crazy bad colds in the last few months, that we now believe were actually Coronavirus. US authorities only just started testing for it, and even now the testing is severely limited, so in all likelihood, many have had or do have it, and it's gotten passed off as just a typical cold - because (AHEM, NEWSFLASH) it IS just a bad cold for the vast majority of people who get it.

The normal colds and flu that we've already been dealing with kill thousands every season - it just doesn't get talked about because it's nothing new and the media can't use it to panic us at this point. It's sad but expected that elderly and immunocompromised people are prone to complications from those viruses. This is no different.

Wash your hands, eat your vegetables, don't touch any old people (for their safety) and calm the heck down. Panic is what's going to crash the market. Panic is what's going to empty stores. Panic is what's going to lead to serious economic impacts from this - YOU are causing economic impacts - not the virus. So please, let's act like we have some sort of sense!

In my opinion, It doesn't sound like it was written by a medical professional. The flu is still very active and, of course, so is the common cold; and many people have been infected by each of them over the last many months.

Covid-19 doesn't present in most people like either the flu or a common cold.

... and the closures and quarantine actions are an attempt to slow the spread so as not to overwhelm the medical infrastructure all at once. The majority of people are likely to get it eventually, the majority of them maybe not so severely. Still the numbers who are projected to be severely impacted are said to be way more than our medical infrastructure can handle in the near term. Spreading out over time those who are going to be severely impacted means less overwhelming of medical facilities.

Wiz, I get that it's going to be difficult, but imagine how your daughter will feel if she didn't heed that advice and you became infected and possibly didn't survive after spending time with the grand kids. Children apparently have minimal or no symptoms when they have been infected, so she has good reason to want to protect you by keeping them away. Let her have a little peace of mind in this extraordinary situation. Talk to your grand kids on the phone and tell them how much you miss them and look forward to seeing them again... and wait it out. It will pass.

Wiz, you're not alone in this advice from our adult kids. Also, keep in mind children are carriers of this virus even if they don't have symptoms themselves.
