I like the part about the tapered cartridge rim. Should help minimize inner magtube hang up on rims.
I agree with this in a tube feed rifle.

For my own knowledge I just took a standard round of 30-30 and inserted it into the side gate of a Winchester and looked closely. The beveled rim will do nothing to 'smooth' out loading of a side gate rifle. The gate opens far enough to allow the rim to enter it easily - bevel or not.

We have been loading side gate rifles for how long now? And suddenly a beveled rim is needed?

Most side gate loading problems are due to an excessively stiff mag tube spring and many need to be shortened for proper load gate function.

For the Henry tube load it will be advantageous but offers nothing to a side gate system.

The Winchester and others don't have a removable inside mag tube, so there is nothing to catch on the rim. Henry still retains the inside tube on their sidegate models so the same problem exists with it catching on rims as the tube load only models. The beveled cartridge rim is there specifically as a condescension to the Henry design, and is indeed irrelevant to Winchester, etc.

The author of the article did not explain this difference in rifle designs, or the real reason for the bevel, but should have. :)

Correct - I had forgotten about Henry retaining the removable loading tube with the advent of the side gate.
so the same problem exists with it catching on rims as the tube load only models
It probably would have been a better idea if Henry had dropped the removable load tube with the side gate models to eliminate this problem.

Maybe, but doing that would have upset those who like the tube load/unload, and having the option was a selling point for a wider market. They certainly did not want to alienate their existing customer base, but did want to capture some of the competitions market share. "Best of both worlds", which Henry did emphasize in their marketing last year. I think they did it right.

What Henry SHOULD do is market an adapter to sell that would eliminate the load tube for those who have long term experience with side gate guns and would like a Henry but not wanting to deal with the load tube issues.

Be pretty easy. Nothing more than a closed outer tube, a fitted follower similar to a Winchester, a spring and a tube end lock plug which could twist lock like the original and presto! No more rim hang up issues AND easy to remove for spring and inner tube cleaning.

Or offer factory built non - removable load tube models - then "Best of both worlds" would more aptly apply.

No doubt that was considered in the meetings leading up to the side gate decision. I'd have loved to be a fly on the wall for those discussions. :)

Anthony would be the one to make the final decision, and I guarantee that of the alternatives presented by the "technical" guys, the one that is most likely to benefit the bottom line of the company would win his blessing. I've been in meetings like this at my former employer. The money always wins. Which is the way it has to be, because if the bottom line loses, you are out of business. Simple as that.

I might need to try a box of each offering.
Wish they'd also consider throwing in the .35Rem.

New Federal Ammo for Henry Levers

Post by MarkB » Wed Jan 29, 2020 6:53 pm

Henry just sent out an email announcing a new series of ammo called "Hammerdown" developed with Federal and Henry for lever action rifles. The .357 Mag has a 170 grain bullet at 1240 fps. Just announced so all calibers are "Currently Unavailable".

Yeah, I saw this earlier. This might be a good thing for new shooters or non handloaders. Just not in Ca., unfortunately.
