Young people always doing stuff
Went to look for shed antlers with my son today...it's early but a FEW have started dropping. (My son found one today, I found zero)...anyway we went looking where there are some elk... Missouri has been trying to re-establish in then for a few years...I think total herd might be 200 or so....anyway I dropped him off where he was going walk a couple miles to the east to some food plots that are only walk in access ...I was going to go north and then West to different plots...as I watched him walk down the valley past some elk a couple hundred yards from me, I heard a bull elk bugling..I thought it is a little late for elk to be bugling. But what do I know about elk. ?! ... Anyway , later in the day when we got back together I asked him if he heard that elk bugling.. he laughed and said it was him. Apparently him and one if his buddies have been practicing at work, (the are carpenters building a house) he said they had been driving the other guys crazy cause they been practicing a lot during the day....and he had been doing it at home enough his wife threatened to stick a dirty sock in his mouth....but I was impressed. .he did sound like an elk bugling with just his mouth!!.....go figure young people ...always trying stuff....

That's a good skill to have. Does he do other critters? Turkey maybe?

I have a great deal of respect for the skills some folks have in areas where I have next to none or even less .... vocalizing an elk bugling is one such skill .... do hope they will be able to raise self sustaining herd in your area

My sister lived in Albuquerque for 20 years. They used to go rough camping on occasion. One night, they left camp in the middle of the night, very frightened. They thought they were hearing a woman screaming.....it was Elk!..

We have a huge population of elk here and hear them often.
Have to watch spelling on these threads....if you are not careful you are soon talking about "elf" hunting...not PC this time of year.

We have a 'local' herd of about 250 + in my area.We have a huge population of elk here and hear them often.
They are often on the sideroads grazing etc. I have seen some of their sheet piles on my property but never seen any. I sometimes hear them bugling in the woods behind my house.
They hang out near a very large, local State Park where they probably get food thrown out to them occasionally.

Just the other side of the border in BC is the Elk Valley. About a half hour from home. Aptly named. Near the border it's not uncommon to see a herd of 500 or so grazing on the east slope. Quite a sight. They are pretty cool animals. The calves are really awkward looking though...all legs and neck.

I had an interesting experience a couple years ago.
I was riding my quad about a mile behind my house and saw off to my left a couple elk running their way toward me.
Ok so I watched a little more and saw a few more and suddenly saw a GIGANTIC heard running HARD my direction! I rode to the base of the closest tree and probably 200 + ran hard AROUND me and the tree !
I tried hard to get my camera video going but about the time I did they were gone !
The were literally FEET away from me!

Thats funny! While backpacking one time I had a coyote come up to the back of my tent about 6" away from my head and let out a maniacal laugh/scream! That was a hair raising experience !They thought they were hearing a woman screaming.....it was Elk!..
Can't say I have ever heard an elk sound like a woman screaming but I have heard a lot of weird noises out of deer !

Wish I could see a herd of about 500 during hunting season. Elk steak on the grill time.
