I guess it was the westerns back in the 50's that hooked me. Having a Daisy BB gun probably added quite a bit to it as well. I can't get on board with optics on a lever but to each his own.

I never could either, until my eyes said otherwise. So now I've got both my lever guns scoped during the last 2 years.

Agree with this 100% Gunny. I simply cannot focus correctly with irons.

The westerns also hooked me on levers and period revolvers. I also still have my Daisy Winchester BB gun. I don't really like optics on levers either, unfortunately I can't shoot worth a darn without them, so my levers have optics (except the BB gun).

Yeah. Live long enough and nearly everything gets compromised or requires after market parts.

The westerns and dads octagon barreled Winchester did it for me.
Some of mine have scopes and some don't.
Those scopes help especially early of the morn, and late of the evening.

Call it the Westerns, or just an educated understanding and knowledge of the history is what gave me an appreciation for lever actions early on.

AND, as I have said before a Winchester Mod 94 comes to my shoulder with all the finery and grace of a Stradivarius, the stock drop and sight plane nearly perfect.

When I decided to look for an all purpose rifle, the lever became the obvious choice. Caliber is a more detailed choice. I am a believer in the 'combo' thinking. So, the 357 carbine and revolver were a natural match. The carbine Henry will do anything you ask of it.

For me, it was my grandfather King, a die hard Texan with a hell of a history. As a young lad I would go with King to fell trees in Madera Canyon. He always had his Model1894 octogon barrel hanging in the rifle rack in the window of his 52 willies P/U. Grandma had her Model 1894 in 32 WS behind the kitchen door. One day I asked King why she kept a rifle behind the kitchen door and he replied "she shot a man who came to do me harm"
I was sold forever, and have both rifles in the safe today.

I have liked lever guns since since I was a boy with my first pop gun. I've wanted a Henry since I first saw an original in .44 rim fire. I think that is the best looking gun I've ever seen.
I still want a New Original Henry in .45 colt. I have a 7mm rem mag, left handed, that may be traded for a Henry .45-70 some time in the near future. I'm sure I'll get the .45-70 even if I don't trade.

understood on a Henry 45-70 .... I don't own any safe queens, all of ours are shooters .... our Henry 44 travels with us all over the country and has fired untold thousands, if not tens of thousands, of rounds .... all that being said, our 45-70 is exceptional .... holding it in your hands you know you have something special .... saying solid simply doesn't express the feel

Carried a Mattel Winchester 73 with me everywhere when I was a little kid. Lever action, metal parts, cap roll in it and fake cartridges to load and eject. Never got over my love for cowboy rifles.

I am also somewhat interested in SASS. There are a couple of clubs here in Alberta but nothing close to home. There is a range not too far away, not sure if SASS or not but they do competitive cowboy shooting there. I will check it out next summer. I have met the guy who owns it, used to be his guest ranch but they retired and converted it to a range. I am not interested in turning my guns into race guns though so pretty sure I have last place all locked up in the competitions...SASS is big in the USA though. Those guys and gals shoot LOTS of ammo in a season.

I am also somewhat interested in CASS.

As a long time owner and shooter of lever actions I was as well interested in CASS until I was invited to a shoot and a club meeting.

The shoot was 'OK' - but the timed aspect of it really turned me off. The club meeting was also a buzzkiller.

I am NOT a 'competitive' person by nature and would have prefered if the shooting was a non-timed event such as silhouette or something else non-timed but it was not.

I as well liked the CASS idea but like Ed mentioned the timer and competition part isnt for me anymore. Been there done that to much arguing and fighting erupts over first second and third place. There is one shoot I did do some of that I would consider doing again and I liked it because there was no timer. Cowboy silhouette shot at 50,100,150, and 200 yards off hand at steel targets. No time just a certain number of shots at each position with a levergun of your choice.
