red dot sights

Post by Teddy » Tue Dec 10, 2019 3:36 pm

I would like a red dot scope for my henry youth model, but I notice most of these come with the weaver mounts so they would not fit the henry 3/8 rimfire mount.

You will probably have to get a 3/8" to rail adapter.
Pretty common but someone who has done this may have a more experienced approach.

About ten years, back, there used to be red dots with a built in 3/8" base for 22s, but haven't seen any of these in a long time. As above, if you want to use any of the popular red dots with a built-in weaver base, you can use an adapter. I'm not a big fan of adding another link into the mount system, but it does work. Lastly, there are still some 1" tube style red dots out there like the excellent Ultradot 25, which allow you to use a set of standard rimfire rings. Ultradots are not cheap, but they are top quality. Here's one mounted with rimfire rings on a CZ 22 LR.

I put one of these on a Henry pump. Works great I think it would work on that youth model.

I also have a DIP rail adapter. Very simple and works great.

These are cheap and they work great for red dots. Keeps it low profile too.

I have a couple Romeo5 red dots that could be moved to my Henry SGRifle and H001L carbine if I can't get my 73 years old eyes to cooperate using the Skinner Peep and the Iron Sights. I picked up a small bottle of " Glow in the dark paint" at a local craft store and will paint the bead on the SGR and the front sight blade on the carbine. I picked up the carbine yesterday and it being shorter seems to be OK. The Range I shoot at has low lighting and hopefully the paint or a Hiviz front sight will be adequate. The SGR having a longer barrel is another issue. My eyes don't seem to focus on the brass bead as well as the rental SG carbine did. I'll try the "Glow in the dark" paint or my wife's red nail polish. Also, the bead covers most of the target's center at 50 yards. If all fails I'll mount the red dot on one or both but it will be a shame not to be able to use the Skinner sight on the SGR. Any thoughts?

The Sig Romeo has a small, 2 moa dot. It is excellent for your plinking. I am debating using it for hunting.

I put the "Glow in the dark" paint on both rifles after my last post. I have to remove the shroud on the carbine for the sight to receive more natural light. However the SGRifle bead was also painted with the "Glow in the dark paint" and I had no problem seeing the painted bead. Just in case I've got the Romeo5 and adapters ready for Friday's Range session.

First range day with the H001L carbine. Had to remove the front sight shroud in order to get some light on the "glow in the dark" paint. The rifle was way off, too low and to the left. I took a plastic faced mallet and a punch to move the rear sight per the video. I took my smallest screw driver but the set screw is way smaller than my small screwdriver. Gave up and mounted the red dot. Fair result at 50 yards on a 12 inch target. 4 shots in 2 inch bullseye, 10 in the 4 inch ring, 8 in the 8 inch ring and 1 in the 12 inch ring. What size screwdriver is needed to loosen the rear sight set screw? I also attempted to remove the front sight and replace it with a Hiviz unit the I had ordered. No luck removing the screws! What's is the secret?

Nag nag. Lol. I truly am blessed in that regard. I'll tell the story of getting that deer out of the field someday. Good campfire stuff. We need a Rocky Mtn gathering sometime. Fiends around the campfire, everybody's high...Wait...flashback.
