I saw a set of swinging metal targets today at the hardware store. Made by Crosman and looked like for pellets.

Would a 45 Colt destroy it or would it work? Looking for something for 50+ yard work. They were quite small which is what I want.

If it's 1/4" steel you should be okay. This is an aluminum plate I use for my 100yd range plate. .22 will knock the paint off, 9mm will leave a pock mark. The holes are from a .308. It's 1/2" thick. I have tons of scrap metal that I make targets out of. I also have 1/4" steel that works pretty good for 9mm. I think the Crosman targets are 1/4"

I have been shooting steel for 35 years. After the first of the year I am going to post some info/ideas for portable ranges and targets including steel. Since I always transport my range to a shooting area, I have streamlined the process down to make it easy.
As far as steel, you need to know a couple of things:
Type of Steel
Thickness of steel
Caliber of weapon and type of ammo.

So, in a nut shell, AR500 steel is bullet proof, literally. You can use a 1/4 inch AR500 target with any handgun caliber expect magnum. You also get a nice large GONG when struck. As we say, "Let Freedom Ring!"

As an example, you can get a 10 inch 1/4 inch steel target in AR500 for about $25.00
Another good steel, a step down form the AR500 is 46100 steel. It is the type of steel used in armored plating by the military. A 5/16 10 inch target in 46100 is $30.00. The difference is the 5/16 inch target will hold up to a 5.56 or .308 round with a velocity at target not exceeding 2,400 FPS without any pitting.

As above. Anything specifically rated only for air guns is just that, only for airguns. Can't even use them for rimfires. From experience, I can tell you that even 22 Shorts will destroy such targets. This is more than just an economy issue, by the way. It's also a potential safety issue because those metal targets can send pieces flying when they break.

While we're on the subject, let me caution anyone using air guns on air gun rated spinner targets that are very tiny and lightly built. Many of these are the ones you find for sale at Wal-Mart. These dainty AG spinner targets will produce ricochets with pellets when the spinner is struck a glancing blow, because the spinners are too light to adequately deform the pellets. I have experienced this, so this is not here-say. If you are using these in your backyard with neighbors on either side, you have a potentially serious problem. I no longer use them. I make it a point to use only the heavier metal AG targets.

Moving on. There are some spinner and reactive targets that are rated for airgun AND rimfire use, but they have restrictions on how close you can be to use them safely with rimfires. Also note, that those soft, self healing spinners that are rated for rimfire are NOT safe to use with airguns, because they will bounce off, instead of penetrating. Says so right on the package.

Centerfire guns should only be used with targets rated for that kind of use, but be sure to read the restrictions that are provided with them.

We are taking about store bought targets, here. They will all include ratings for use, so be sure to read before you buy. If you are going homemade, you are on your own.

I was asking him for more information on the Crosman targets he had been looking at.

As for my own shooting of steel I have plenty of scrap sheets around as well as a shooting tree with 2 sizes of paddles.

This what a 5.56mm fired from a Long Ranger at 75yds will do to the steel scraps I have. 1/2" thick steel and it is nearly penetrated.

That is one of my 'next' projects - to fab a small, portable swing steel target.

A friend of mine made one that is a unique design, free standing and very portable. It's primarily intended for pistol but could be made only a bit bigger for longer range rifle. It has a 4" and a 2" 'gongs'

I think I have a pic of it I'll post.
