Colt .45 shootout at the range!

Post by fortyshooter » Wed Dec 04, 2019 8:16 pm

Got down to the range today for some Colt 45 fun and to test some ammo I made up using 6.0 gr. of Red Dot powder with a MB coated 255 gr. SWC.
The Red Dot shooter would be my Taylor's & Co. "Running Iron" six shooter which also has the tuned action option.

Also brought along my fine Ruger Bisley Blackhawk .45 Colt and wanted to do some testing after opening up the cylinder throats to .452 dia.

First up was the Running Iron clocking the 255 gr bullets loaded with 6 gr. of Red Dot in the 740 FPS range.
Very mild shooting and they grouped fairly well from 12 yds. with one handed and standing shooting position.
Later on I went to my 8.2 gr. Unique load which had a bit more punch but I do like how the Red Dot load performs.

Next up was the big ol' Ruger Bisley with same MB coated 255 gr. bullet but with 9.5 Unique which is my standard load
for this revolver. The Bisley grip soaks up any recoil really well and was getting a couple of good groups shooting one handed
from 15 yds. Later my 2 hand hold gave better success on targets while remembering how to line up my target using the ghost ring sight again!

Was a very fun afternoon shooting up 100 rounds of .45 Colt!

Love the way you shoot those 45s!

I also love our Taylor/Uberti 45s and they have proper throat sizes for shooting lead bullets, right out of the box. One has the Taylor tuned action and one the standard action, but even the standard action has an excellent trigger.

Thanks NCG! Yes that Running Iron is really slick and quick on the hammer pull with a really nice trigger pull and of course the four Colt "clicks".
I had recently taken the Uberti birds head grip frame off and re-installed the original checker gun fighter grips and wanted to see how that would affect shooting. Looks like that's OK.
Might reload some more of the Red Dot load too. I've had that pound of RD sitting around unused for a few years.
