Re: Reloading newbie stupid question.
the carbide ring is what allows you resize the case without having to lube it .... I'd think long and hard before removing it

Re: Reloading newbie stupid question.
The warning is for rifles that have wider than usual barrel grooves an need wide than usual cast bullets.have order 500 .429" bullets. Should I remove this ring as a precaution?
Personally, I'm switching over to the collect die.

Re: Reloading newbie stupid question.
So what is the idea size for the Henry 44 .429? I was asking on the Marlin forum. Just for the die type and they say their 44 rifles are set for .431-432
At the end of the day, I just wanted to take the next step from the seating die and have a dedicated crimp die. It really makes no sense to me to buy a die where the first thing I have to do is hammer out one of the parts. Sounds like the collet die may be the choice!

Re: Reloading newbie stupid question.
the Nosler 240 gr jacketed bullets we fire in our Henry BBS 44 Mag and Ruger Redhawk 44 Mag are all .429 .... the Missouri Bullet Company lead bullets we tested years ago were .430 .... the Oregon Trail cast bullets were .431 we loaded all of them with the same RCBS carbide dies and Lee Crimp die .... they all worked just fine

JEBar:
Thanks. Some Marlin guys were trying to tell me .429 is for pistol and.432 is rifle. Weed out the bs! I looked high and low for 44 mag bullets from Berrys to Western muntion. All were .429.
Despite them, I still love my Marlin 1895 too!
I just checked out the Oregon Bullet site and they do sell the 240 grain .431. Sounds like the Marlin guys are using these. I'll stick with the .429 as they are way easier to find

Albertaktm, check the Missouri Bullet website. They may just have what you need/want.

OP,
Many mentions of bullet diameter but skimming back through y be three I can't find a specific mention of jacketed bullets or cast lead.
Maybe that is where the confusion is.

I've ordered some plated and jacketed round .429. From what I've read it's best to stay away from the lead projectiles unless there are431 or better.

Re: Reloading newbie stupid question.
This is NOT true.I was told that you need lube for the collet style.
The collet style compresses it's 'jaws' around the mouth of the case to crimp the bullet.
This action does NOT require lube.
This discussion is beginning to make less sense. Now everyone on another forum is saying remove the carbide ring with a punch (directions were given)
I have no experience with the FCD that creates a roll crimp and resizes the case but it seems to be a redundant concept to me. The case is resized with a typical resizing die and if one wants to roll crimp that is normally done with the typical bullet seating die.
Why anyone would want to buy a separate die that roll crimps as a separate operation (and resizes as well) MIGHT be missing something and should probably study up on reloading a little more - specifically the parts about case sizing and crimping.
It might sound like I am 'passing judgement' but the roll crimp FCD with the resizer appears to be a useless gimmick that has little practical use.
The collet style crimping die is the best alternative to roll crimping I have experienced so far.

Re: Reloading newbie stupid question.
we buy most of our 44 240 gr from Shooter's PRO Shop ===> http://www.shootersproshop.com/nosler-p ... 100ct.html .... these .429 diameter bullets have cosmetic blemishes that have no impact on the bullet's performance, I do not hesitate to use them for hunting .... they often have deals going where you can buy $100 or more not have to pay shipping .... their prices do reflect a bit of a savings in buying boxes 100 that usually require you have to buy boxes of 250 or moreAlbertaktm wrote: ↑Mon Nov 25, 2019 12:24 pmI've ordered some plated and jacketed round .429. another source is Roze Distribution ====> http://www.rozedist.com/mm5/merchant.mv ... =ZBJ-44MAG .... they deal in bulk buys and offer exceptional prices .... I use them for practice/range shooting .... YES, they have a .431 diameter .... NO I haven't had any issues ....

Re: Reloading newbie stupid question.
The bullet seating operation can change the diameter of the case. Crimping can also induce bulges, although I believe that is normally when too heavy a crimp is applied, either through an improperly adjusted crimp, or too long a case.Mistered wrote: ↑Mon Nov 25, 2019 12:36 pmThis is NOT true.I was told that you need lube for the collet style.

Separating the seat and crimp operation makes adjustments easier, and some folks see a benefit to not having the roll crimp being applied while the bullet is still moving into the case. By separating the two operations, the bullet has already been completely seated when the crimp is applied.
One of the arguments against the use of a pistol caliber FCD is that it can sometimes resize larger diameter cast bullets creating a lack of neck tension. I've never experienced that, but can understand the mechanics of it.

Re: Reloading newbie stupid question.
Thanks for all the suggestions as to where to buy bullets. Being in Canada you can’t order most stuff sold online in the U.S.
Hell, I’m still waiting for my 6.5 Creedmoor bolt handle, not bolt, just the handle, to be released from customs. It’s only been there 3 weeks!

Re: Reloading newbie stupid question.
agree .... early on I spent more time hunting than practicing ....my firm belief was that I should practice with the same equipment (firearms, ammo, etc) and under the same conditions (firearm rested in a stand, free hand, seated, etc) that I hunted with .... I'm trying to adjust to the new reality that hunting is all but a thing of the past .... I've already reduced my 44 Mag load for use in a Redhawk so as to lesson recoil and make it more fun to fire .... haven't done so for the Henry because its hunting load is already fun to fire .... times change and even though I some times resist change, sometimes its necessary .... what hasn't changed is the concept of practicing with the load that is most important to me

Re: Reloading newbie stupid question.
both of our boys have two 308 Ruger M77's, two 30-06 M77's, two Mark II's, two 10-22's, and two 357 GP 100's .... over they years I've had Ruger single action revolvers in 22, 357, 44 mag but they simply didn't fit me .... back in '92 I happened onto a 44 mag Redhawk that has served me well every since .... if I ever do buy a another handgun it will be a 357 GP100
Re: Reloading newbie stupid question.
Check out the bullets that Rose Distribution sells and they are right there with the cost of Berrys. Zero Bullets are great for plinking.
