We drive ours until it's they're not worth the ongoing maintenance. Then donate them. Ones we have now just keep going. So it's been a while since we gave one up. Used to be we could donate them to the local high school autoshop. But they don't have shop anymore in the high schools here. Last one we donated to a charity that auctions them off.

Nearly all of my vehicles have gone to the scrapyard when I had gotten all the goodie I could from them.

wow .... don't think I've ever kept one that long .... have had a couple that the folks I sold them to had to tow them out of our yard

The one I kept the longest was an 81 Corolla. Bought it for $500 drove it for 16 years. Replaced it with a $200 Nissan truck that I drove for 11 years.

Our oldest was a '75 GMC Suburban we bought in 1986. Had it for 28 yrs. Let go of it at the end of 2014. Had a big block 454 that used a lot of oil. A trip to gas station to fill up also meant filling up the oil. Very easy to work on.

motor technology and construction have made major positive strides since '75 .... longevity has made major advances and my wife's 2016 V6 Camaro has horsepower ratings that a mussel car of my youth would have been proud of ....

For almost 20 yrs from about 72 on, horse power was wimped out to get cars to pass emissions. Then with car makers going on in with fuel injection, and all kinds of computer sensors/controls, we get back the horse power and can still pass emissions. A 4 cylinder Toyota at 200 horses has almost as much as the '73 302 Mustang's 210 horsepower.

Some of the new cars are crazy fast compared to production model muscle cars from the '70s. Dodge Demon comes with 840bhp. Some of the new supercars are over 1400bhp.

GD! I hate when a long post disappears.
I'll try again...My pet peeve is that so many commercials have been banned from TV because they might have a bad effect on our children and send a bad message. What about almost every car commercial showing speed, horsepower and general, reckless driving. Is this what should be a lure for teens today??...deadly....Johney...watch this!!

As parents we do our best to raise our kids with exposure, knowledge and responsible behavior so that they are themselves capable of wisely managing their responses to the temptations and lures. Choose poorly, and well, callus as it is - thinning of the herd in the worst case. Lesson learned otherwise.
