Disappointed 10/22 shooter

Post by bandit1250 » Wed Jun 15, 2016 12:06 pm

I put my 513S Sporter in a 513T stock so I could shoot it with peep sights and not notch the factory sporter stock for the sight to clear. It was a very nice day with no wind so I took it and a lever Marlin and went to the range. Put my target at 50 Yds. and then fired a few at 25 to make sure after having the sight off it would still be close to on. It was close enough to shoot at 50 but then my bulls were to small and I had nothing to color them in with me in my box or truck so I put my target board at 40 yds. Then another guy pulled in and we talked guns for a while and he showed me his recently built 10/22 Ruger with a .920 GM barrel and custom stock and new trigger. Pretty nice piece. He then said "How does this set up shoot against a bolt rifle like yours." I said "Try if you don't mind 40 instead of 50 Yds. So we both shot two groups and he was looking through his scope(4.5-14) and said "This rifle sucks." I told him it will shoot better after shooting it and tweaking it some. He then said "How can peep sights shoot better than a scope?" I tied to explain aperture sights are not ordinary peep sights but he didn't get it. So I continued to shoot after he decided he was done but he stayed and watched. I shot several different ammo brands I had with me. Some were better than others but most were good. The targets were all 40 yds. and all were the 513S except his two with the 10/22 that are marked. Here is the Sporter 513 in the target stock.

This is the targets we shot. All are 5 shot groups.

Before he left he told me he wasn't going to tell his buddy's that a older guy with a rifle that was the same age as him(67) kicked his --- using some kind of a peep sight. ;)

Yeah, but I think you would do the same thing to most of us. A few on here might be able to hang with you, but not many.

Wow, Bandit! Your POIs are so right on that your target costs are zip. Great shooting again!

Rifles, camaraderie, and competition always go well together. 8-)

Nice shooting "old guy" :D
Some of the 10/22 builders overestimate what the gun is.
Not saying there aren't some very accurate 10/22 rigs out there. And guys who can shoot them well.
But I will put my money on a bolt gun and a good shooter any day.
Load on Sunday and Shoot all Week.......okay it's a Mare's Leg I will reload on Wednesday. ;)

Here is what they measured using calipers. Largest was .504 and the best was .169. Now these were shot on a perfect conditions day and using my wife's home made sand bags. I have a Caldwell rest and I hate it. I shoot better off bags. I need to put it in a yard sale. I shot a group today with my 521T Remington at 50 yds. that is a bragging group but also it was just everything went right for that 5 shots. :D
