Longer Barrels

I am a big fan of 22 to 26 inch barrels on lever guns.
HRA responded to Lever action silhouette shooters with their 24" Frontier 22lr. In a market wear there were virtually no new production rifles., Henry 22lrs are now well represented at matches.
Not so much for center fire rifles. In my opinion it's the lack of anything with a bar longer than 20 inches.
With only iron sights being allowed, sight radius is a major consideration in the sport.

Anything longer than 20", while nice for reaching out there, is much more cumbersome to drag through the woods for the average size hunter.
I am 6', and I can hold a 20" barrel at arms length and pointed at the ground, but there's not a lot of clearance left.

If I had a 24" barrel at arms length it would likely touch the muzzle to the ground.

I also prefer longer barrels. To me the carbine barrel length 'looks' too short.

Oh, I like the carbines also, especially for woods walking.
One of the reasons I had one of the 35's cut down, and why I bought the 444 P.
But those long octagon barrels are just plain sexy.

for having to walk very far to a hunting spot or hunting while walking through an area, I prefer light weight carbines .... when hunting from an easy to get to stand, I prefer a heavier rifle with a longer barrel ....

Although not a Henry, my Winnie 1894 Sportin' Rifle has a 24" Octagon Barrel. Definitely has that classic look. I realize they are a bit heavier, but if you can't carry one, you should start doin' more pushups/pullups, anything to get your biceps into shape.
I am reminded of the football coach who was asked why he made his running back carry the football 30-35X/game. He said, the football is not all that heavy!!!

As long as force exerted by the pressure in the barrel exceeds the frictional resistance of the bullet/barrel, the bullet will continue to accelerate. Gas pressure drops off as enclosed volume increases and cools, plus any loss due to leaks (cylinder/barrel gap in wheel guns for example) or diversion of gas for purposes other than pushing the bullet. At what length of bullet travel friction overcomes gas pressure can vary considerably between barrels and individual rounds in the same barrel, and even with atmospheric conditions at the time of the shot. This is all basic internal ballistics, albeit some factors are less influential than others.
