Getting Old - Tricks

Post by BrokenolMarine » Wed Oct 16, 2019 8:10 am

Eyes get old. I hang my "Clic" reading glasses around my neck when I get up, and take them off when I go to bed. No more wandering around the house wondering where I left my dang glasses. I have an opti-visor on the fly tying table and "borrow it," when doing detailed cleaning or work at the gun bench. I keep another in the woodshop for fitting dovetails or precise joints. This gets me thru most issues where my diminishing vision frustrates me.

i can't wear my glasses in the shower, however, and I am betting the young pups in the label design departments sit around and laugh about the thought of old folks trying to read the dang labels on shampoo and conditioner bottles in the dim light of the shower.

Both bottles are the same color, size, and shape.
Poor contrast on the background and the information.
The brand name jumps off the bottle.
The words shampoo on one and conditioner on the other may as well be a "Where's Waldo?" Game.

:D

I finally started marking the shampoo with a giant S using a bold sharpie. I have hair a quarter in long, no need for conditioner, plus, if the shampoo is marked... ;)

Then, amazingly, Miss T bought shampoo in a square pump bottle. Hold on to that bottle, I told her, even when that shampoo is gone. Buy any shampoo you like, and pour it in that fat square bottle. I can find it among the other half dozen round/oval bottles on the shower bench.

I also added a drop off red nail polish to the stop button on the blue ray player remote, yellow on the pause, and green on the play. A cover of clear when they dried. The symbols on the dang thing are too small too see unless you bring the remote up close and squint at it. Just makes it easier when the phone rings or we need to refill the coffee cups.

I have also set the daily alarm feature on my phone for 9am and 10pm. When it goes off, I check to insure I have taken my morning/evening meds. I rarely forget now, with that reminder. ;)

Anyone else have helpful tips/tricks, I am certainly open to suggestions. 8-)

I do that, too. And, like you, when I'm not sleeping, my readers are always hanging from my neck. But, I'm basically bald, so shampoo and conditioner don't factor into my world at all. ;)

I'm probably not alone on this one.
Whenever I drop something, It's a crisis. Bending over to pick up whatever I drop is not fun. Need to check Wally World for one of those ' picker-upper 'things. have about given up, when at the store, squatting or kneeling down to look at that bottom shelf; too hard to get back up. Don't know of a trick or fix for that one. :(

Mark, always take a youngin with you. As for dropping stuff, bummer. I find I have developed an amazing ability to catch falling items. Its weird. Maybe too much practice. Lol

I have a grabber beside my recliner, and... I put one in the back window of the ranger UTV... I drive along the road frontage and use it to pick up trash and toss it in the back of the dang thing. We live in a blind curve... ;) ... so folks think it's the perfect spot to throw their trash out of the windows into the ditch line. We have nearly 1,200 feet of road frontage, so slow down and you can throw an amazing amount of stuff out. We aren't alone, they do the same thing to the neighbor across the road. :) Good Neighbor... We cut the road frontage, and so does he... it's gotten to be a thing. When he cuts his, he crosses the road and cuts ours. We do the same. Keeping it cut, improves the view thru the curve and reduces the number of deer leaping from the high grass into the traffic. :)

Every couple days when I drive down to pick up the mail, I pick up the trash. Funny thing, I saw him on his ATV with a trash bag hanging from the handle bars, and a grabber.

My Shepherd was trained to pick up things I dropped. The westie looks at me like, "You dropped it, YOU pick it up old man." :o

My daughter's blue healer trys a similar stunt. Loves to to fetch a thrown ball, but brings it back and drops it about 15ft short and expects me to come get it. I don't and she brings it little bit closer testing me along the way. Eventually she's brought it within reach.

Yes I have to have my 3X pair of glasses over top my normal when doing any close up work or reading fine print.
If I lay them down someplace I better grab them soon or forget where they went!

For the bathroom/shower try swapping in one of the LED type bulbs like a 60 Watt...lot of light with less actual power used.

So far I've been able to grab hold of a higher shelf and use it to help pull myself back up.

My thing is with multi-colored masking tape. I use small snips of the stuff to mark hard to distinguish buttons on electronics and larger strips on storage containers, etc. Wife didn't take kindly to my earlier use of finger nail polish and permanent marker directly on things. Sometimes I hear about my over use of the tape, particularly yellow.

I also have a cheap pair of reading glasses I got off a grocery store end cap. They came in tube. My regular progressive lens don't work for close up work, insufficient near sight focus range.

This one for getting old only because when you get older so do your kids. When they leave home you don't have those extra helping hands when you need them. In place of them I find my self making temporary support jigs instead.

I find that the beer just fills me up and more whiskey is need to do the job that beer once did.

In time sequence, beer, whiskey, and tequila, I grew tolerant, took too much to do it. I don't bother with those too much anymore. Now it's 100 proof Smirnoff Silver and sometimes 151.

Same problem here especially when the info I'm trying to read on the bottom shelf is still to far away to read with my bi-focals. When I'm doing outside work I'm finding it's helpful to have my walking stick or a shovel to stand back up.

I have progressive lenses in my glasses that help in the seeing dept. What is left of my hair I use a bar of soap on. I guess when you reach the the point of no return it gets more simple.
