Thoughts on DNZ Products Scope Rings for Single Shot .45-70

Post by Cooper » Sun Sep 29, 2019 9:43 am

I do not want to remove my rear fixed sight to mount the scope rings. The rings that are on the Henry website require the rear sight to be removed. Has anyone used the DNZ Products, 1 piece precision rifle scope mounting system, the Game Reaper, designed for the Harrington & Richardson rifle, SKU 11003? I noticed a reviewer on Midway's website saying he/she used this mount successfully on the Henry H015-4570.

Any thoughts on other mounts that do not require the rear sight to be removed, or grinding down a slot on the mount?

Thanks!

Cooper

I used a Warne M981 base on my single shot 45-70. It is short enough to still clear the rear sight (not by much), BUT, my rifle is an early model, which had the scope mounting screws located slightly farther to the rear than current models. That also required a simple modification of the base to clear the standing breech - a little filing so the rear of the base was slightly cantilevered over the receiver (as a number of bases for other single shots are). The nice thing about the Warne base being made of steel is that it's both easy to work, and it blues well to refinish it. I've since used the same base on two new model H015 rifles, a 30-30 and .308, it fits perfectly, BUT the rear sights on those are located farther forward than on 45-70's, so I can't say with certainty that base would fit a new model 45-70 or .44 Mag. without a little filing to clear a folded down rear sight - but it wouldn't be much. There may be some other H&R/NEF bases that also would fit; I like the Warne's blued steel and compact size. It works well with smaller scopes.

Thanks, I did not realize that different Henry H015's had the rear sight in different locations. I appreciate the responses.

In installed the DNZ Scope mount on the Henry .45-70 single shot and it fit very nicely and does not come close to the rear sight.

Sharp looking! Hows the height of it for you?

There were two heights. High and Extra High. I selected High. I am pleased with its height. I put about 25 rounds through it with the scope and the only adjustment I made was to move the scope back further. Zeroing was the easiest I have ever done, break open the barrel and look down the barrel; then glance up and look through the scope. Adjust the elevation/windage until they are the same sight picture. Who needs a laser bore sight?

One of the benefits of a sighting in a single shot, for sure. That's a nice looking mount, compact enough for both the rifle and the scope. My kind of scope, too ;) .

Cooper, Thank you - Very Nice Looking Firearm.

I came to this discussion late, could not find specifics of the scope. Could anyone publish the details (make, model, magnification, ...)? As a new owner of an H015223, I'm looking for a scope. Glad to find DNZ has a model of Game Reaper that fits the H015. I have had a DNZ mount on my 10/22 for about a year, so I am sold on their quality.

Welcome to the forum Single shot. I think if it was me a scope with more magnification would be in order for a 223.

Thank you BigAl42. I liked the lines & look of Cooper's set-up, so wondered about the scope details

Now that I know DNZ makes a compatible mount, I am considering a 36 - 40mm objective with 3-9 or 4-12 magnification. Some fine, fine glass out there: Decisions, decisions.

Welcome from the TV, Oregon!
My Long Ranger .223 is scoped with Leupold 3.5-10x40mm. From my experience, you're in a good ball park for magnification relative to .223 performance.

Thanks for the great feedback. I've ordered the H015-243 and this DNZ mount. Do wish it was a bit lower but will see. Hope it works as good for me as it has for you! Mike

I put this mount onto my .243 and very satisfied. Paired it with a Leupold VX-Freedom 2-7x33.
