I'll get a pic of the rifle in the scabbard on my saddled horse this weekend. I quickly tried it in the scabbard tonight and it does protect pretty much all of the exposed stock. :) Too bad the nice brass butt plate is covered but I ride in some bad*ss deadfall and bush sometimes so better the leather takes a beating.

Will do. Most of the weekend I'm doing wood panels and a wall of "half log" siding in our living room but will squeeze in some riding somewhere.

Nice pictures RanchRoper.
I'm tickled to see you carry your rifle right side up so the weight doesn't bear on the sights. ;) I hate to think of the number of people who put their rifle in a saddle scabbard with the rifle upside down weight bearing on the sights. Not to mention the shifting a rifle goes through in a saddle scabbard.

RanchRoper you could make a "toe" for your saddle scabbard that would protect the butstock. Put a lanyard on it so it won't get lost when you pull it off.
Those work pretty well. I've seen old scabbards that had them.

Everyone thanks for sharing pictures of your Henry's. Someday I'd like a brass frame .45-70. Sure would be nice.

I hear ya, my scabbard actually has a stamped pattern that I had to turn to the inside where it isn't seen so I could have the rifle right side up. It also makes sense drawing it from the scabbard too, although maybe I'd shoot better upside down anyway. I can't recall which side it was in the pic I posted but I've since moved it to the off-side, same as my rope. It balances better there, and it's out of the way when I saddle, cinch up and step on. Now with the stock cover, it's protected not to mention looking ultra cool... 8-)

Nope. It wouldn't be good. I would never fire from horseback anyway, the potential for a wreck would be high even if they were used to the sound. But I have an invitation from a friend of mine to haul the horses over to his ranch sometime soon, turn the horses loose in his corral and shoot into the hill near them. That way they can run around until they no longer have any concerns with the sound. Horses learn very fast, so once they figure out the gunshot is nothing to do with their world, they'd be ok. At least I hope so. If not, I'll be walking home from wherever my horse leaves me.

understood .... while I was in college I worked for a western tourist town (OK, tourist trap) .... we put on shows with various gunfight scenarios, most involved one or more horses .... we were firing black powder blanks, lots of smoke and thunder .... the horses quickly adapted and so long as they were watching what was going on, they were fine ... even at that point it wasn't good to set one off that totally caught them by surprise

Yes they adapt quickly as long as they know what you're doing. But it still must be thunderously loud. I still recall forgetting my ear plugs in the tin shed at the range one time. YEEEEEEOOOOOWWWWW!!!!

RanchRoper, looking at your pictures again. It looks to me like your strap on cartridge holder would protect your buttstock pretty well without any boot?

Yes it covers almost the whole stock that isn't in the scabbard. Better than I thought it would. So I think I'm good to go. I don't ride in as thick bush as I used to, most of the cows I move now are in large open expanses; different ranch, different terrain. But you never know!

I think you are set. If it were me moving cattle you have to move fast, & turn sharply. I would put a strap on the scabbard that would go around the butt so it couldn't flop out.

How about a color case hardened 30 30? It's a shame I haven't shot this one yet, but I will. :D
