Realism in Western Movie

Any comments on Tom Horn with Steve McQueen?

I always liked that movie. McQueen did it right.

next time you watch "The War Wagon" pay close attention to the few seconds where it shows Mr Pierce getting ready to test fire the Gatling gun .... he can be seen fiddling with the back of the gun but what's missing is the magazine .. .. its clear that the turret's ceiling is too close to the top of the gun .... nevertheless, Hollywood shows it firing long burst ..

How about in numerous westerns where a person sets cans/bottles on a hitching rail in front of a building and shoots at them - but no impact on the wall behind them?

However...
While taking a break this morning from stacking wood I was reinstalling a scope on my PCC (thanks to Wingnut who loaned me a set of 'real' Picatinny rail rings) I was 'listening' to an old Roy Rogers movie and watched a part where Roy was fighting the bad guy. Well bad guy has Roy on the ground and manages to get Roy's gun. Roy kicks the guy off, bad guy cocks the gun and aims at Roy but Roy manages to throw a rock at the bad guy, hitting him and sending him sideways. As he turns he shoots and the round hits the ground just a couple feet in front of him to the side of Roy and the round striking the ground looked absolutely REAL! There was no delay between discharge and the dirt kicking up. I also noticed the dirt blew away from the shot and at an angle just like it really does. I don't know what to think about it.....

Just watched the Deadwood movie again on HBO. Whether or not a fan of the series, this is a visual feast for any lover of western period accuracy of detail. The firearms, sets, horse gear, clothing, every little detail right down to the watch chains and old wax candles burning on tables in the saloon. An absolutely bang up job.

Bought the movie "Hostiles" with Christian Bale. Really great story. Good attn to period correct detail as well. Check it out.
