I can only tell you my experience around our place. We only have 10 acres but I am ALWAYS working, maintaining or fixing something. 4 seasons. Not trying to put you off, just know that there is never a time where there isn't something that needs attending to. House, out-buildings, grass, weeds, fences, driveway, downed trees, wood for the stove, equipment maintenance, etc etc. There are times where I sit and enjoy for sure, but the maintenance part is always waiting for me. Winters can be long and tough here and we are similar climate to Montana, although I don't know if they get the warm Chinook winds in winter as a reprieve. Winter prep starts here in summer.
Don't get me wrong, you will love Montana, just be aware with a large property. Good equipment is certainly key to keeping on top of it. Best of luck in your search.
