A new barrel for my friends 10/22

Post by bandit1250 » Sat Nov 16, 2019 7:44 pm

I put a new Green Mountain barrel on my friends Ruger 10/22. We are not very pleased with it on its first trip to the range. It was cold and slightly breezy and it didn't shoot as well as his factory target barrel shoots. We will hit the range weather permitting this week and make some changes one change at a time and try to narrow down what is going on. It double groups like when the bedding is not right or some times they shoot like that when a scope has an issue. Even though it was not a great day for shooting the CZ Grand Finale shot OK. I shot two groups with some RWS target rifle with two different lot #'s. It usually always shoots the L8 number best. I was shooting at staples that he had put two in the target for me. Hit the staples then shot at the hole from the bullet. Both were 10 shot groups. Then shot a five shot group with the L8 number at the bull. This one was close to a wall hanger group and great for the conditions. That Grand Finale will shoot with its preferred ammo.

The after market barrels are usually more accurate because most premium barrels are button or cut rifled instead of hammer forged. Hammer forged shoot pretty well but button or cut rifled is where its at for best target and bench rest accuracy. Doubt you will see a hammer forged barrel in the winners circle at any big matches. They also have tighter chambers than the factory barrels. Plus you can order your choice of length and order a chrome moly or a stainless one. I think his gun has a bedding issue or bad scope because it started shooting bad with the factory barrel so being a shooting match guy he just went ahead and ordered a new barrel. Not me. I would have tried to narrow it down to what happened that it quit shooting with the factory barrel. He dumped a lot of money in to high grade 10/22's and I haven't been impressed enough for me to do it. I will leave the 10/22 money pits to folks with more money than I have and just keep shooting my CZ's. ;) :D

our boys have 10/22's .... in thinking about it, they have at least 5 of them ... a couple are over 30 years .... all shoot really well .... none have been modified .... I've never owned one but if I was in the market for a 22LR today, the first one I'd look at would be a 10/22

The problem with modifying a 10/22 seems to be that once you start it just keeps getting into more and more money and you could have bought a higher grade rifle for less than you you may be into mods for the 10/22. Resale is usually pretty bad for the investment you made unless some one just has to have a modified one. Also most folks figure if your selling it there is a reason behind you not wanting it. I will be truthful in the fact you can make them shoot. My friend has a $1400 Kidd factory built 10/22 style rifle and when he is asked about the accuracy he will reply "It shoots good but buy yourself a CZ for a lot less and a good scope and a fair amount of ammo." His Kidd was back to the factory with a broken trigger in the first two weeks after he bought it. They said it was possibly dry fired.  What 10/22 doesn't get dry fired at the end of just about every mag full of ammo. A factory 10/22 in its life time of service will get dry fired at the end of every mag full and who wants to try to keep count. Plus it was the trigger that wouldn't reset not like a broken firing pin. I have 10/22's here in the Target model but they will not become a money pit for me when I can shoot CZ 452's and not spend ammo money on up grades. The thing about a 10/22 it is the Colt 1911 in rim fire rifles. If you want some thing for it you can get it. All it takes is money. ;) JEBar if you mod one good luck and hope it is super accurate for you when finished.

I have no intention of buying one for myself but wouldn't hesitate to do so if that ever changes .... I have my Grandfather's Remington Model 12 22LR pump with a tang peep sight that was made in June of 1934 .... over the years I've proven that I can hit a quarter at 50 yards several times .... the fact is, I can't see a quarter at that distance unless I position it on a red clay type bank so that the sun reflects off of it .... that's accurate enough for me .... an acceptable level of accuracy is subjective, different strokes for different folks .... I don't hesitate to customize my firearms in whatever manner I believe will enable them to do a better job for me .... historically those mods include reduction of felt recoil, trigger pull, smoothing action operation, scopes/sights, etc .... these mods are made because I keep them and I shoot them .... CZ must produce good rifles .... I've read too many highly favorable comments from folks whose assessments I value to believe otherwise and I'm glad to hear that so many folks enjoy using them .... I've never held one, much less fired one .... I'd most certainly shoot one if the opportunity but unless I undergo a major change of mindset, I will not buy one .... the first rifle I bought for myself was a Belgium made Browning BLR back in 1970 .... to date it is still the only firearm I've purchased that wasn't made in the USA .... don't see that changing

Plus one on how modding a 10/22 can be a money hole. I did the whole mod job on a Charger, which is the pistol version of the 10/22. Lots and lots of hours and lots and lots of aftermarket parts. By the time I was done, I would have had a hard time claiming it was a Ruger, what with all the non-Ruger parts. The other issue with doing the 10/22 mod thing is that you will NEVER get your money back should you try to sell one.

I went with a 10" stainless Kidd barrel and that made a huge difference in accuracy over the standard Ruger barrel. No kidding, I could shoot half inch groups at 50 yards with any ammo and the good stuff got me even smaller groups. The Kidd barrel, by far, was the single biggest improvement in accuracy.

JEBar, I understand about wanting to stay with U.S. made guns, but the U.S. gun makers, short of the very expensive semi-custom stuff like Cooper or Kimber, have gotten out of the wood and steel bolt rimfire market, now, for the inexpensive synthetic bolt guns. They've left the door wide open for CZ as far as traditional wood and metal rimfire bolt guns.

absolutely and I'm glad there are alternatives available .... for me the good news is, I have absolutely no NEED for another long gun .... with the exception of a Long Ranger chambered for 30-30, I don't have a significant WANT for another one .... here again, speaking strictly for myself, it is possible that some new caliber may come along that I find I simply can't live without but that ain't likely ... those factors most certainly make it easy for me to stay with American Made .... in the last 30+ years I've purchased 3 rifles .... all 3 were purchased in the last 5 years and all 3 were made by Henry

Sometimes we buy something for the fun in making the after market mods. For fun regardless of the waste of money.

I really like loading and shooting 30-30 .... I've messed around loading 30-30 cases with top of the line Nosler spitzer bullets to the point I know doing so opens a whole new world for what is usually referred to the "venerable 30-30" .... a truly fun to fire 30 caliber .. a magazine fed Long Ranger would provide that opportunity :D

I share with you the fun of shooting .30-30. I can see the appeal a mag feed .30-30 could have.

if Henry was to ever build one, it wouldn't have any competition .... I'm convinced that it sell and would quickly build a large following

My 10/22 carbine, the hardwood base model, is completely stock, but for the BX trigger I put in it a couple of years ago. It’s a very accurate rifle, and I have seen no reason to fix something that’s not broken.

That being said, Green Mountain has a good reputation. If the barrel doesn’t do better at future range outings, perhaps a call to their customer service would be in order.
