We just lost our last lion,Roman, at the sanctuary that I volunteer at. He was the last of 6 rescues that we received from the Tiger King Ranch.
I'm sorry to read about Roman. It must be especially hard on the staff who for years compassionately nurtured him and others. My condolences.

I hope you'll start a thread here to share pics and stories from the sanctuary. What a rewarding experience it must be.

Cold and foggy at Magnolia this morning. I missed the eagle fight by about 5 minutes. Friend of mine got some really cool shots of the two going after each other with talons extended. The heavy fog gave things a different look.

Bad hair day.

This tern posed nicely for me and allowed me to get within about 10 feet or so from it.

This was my favorite of the day. Reminds me a little of a studio portrait. Probably just the background and soft lighting.

I'm torn between 7940 and 7518 for the very same reason. Crisp, well lighted images with soft neutral backgrounds. Like studio portraits, but not. Excellent work. Thanks.

7518 looks almost 3D. I’ve noticed that is some other pics you have posted. Nice work! :D

Visual separation of the background and the subject is one of the things you look for when setting up an image. There are multiple factors that contribute to that separation. Distance from camera to subject, distance from subject to background, aperture, focal length, color and "busyness" difference between subject and background.

In this case, I was using the max aperture, a long focal length, lots of distance between subject and background, and a very smooth/neutral background.

This is another from that string. This was early on, I gradually moved closer and switched to a vertical orientation. Always take an insurance shot before moving up on a subject.

And this one just begs for a B&W treatment.

Another day of mediocre results at Magnolia. There were lots and lots of ibises and coots. The eagles were nowhere to be seen and the owls taunted me from the bamboo forest, but were well hidden. I did get some birds in flight shots.

I've been trying to get some good ducks in flight images. I'm managing to get more, and better shots, but haven't really gotten exactly what I'm looking for. I'm hoping to get a small handful of really good ones before summer is over. The first one would have been much better if I could have gotten her coming towards me, and a little closer. I had to crop a good bit and it doesn't have the resolution I'd like for a big print.

Here's the whole string of them landing. I missed the initial approach as I was on a dyke beside the retention pond and alternately looking to the right and then the left for the next group to come flying in or out. I had just looked back to the left and saw them on short final. It took a little time to raise the camera, find them in the viewfinder and lock focus. These were just quick crop and export with minimal editing, so as to show what the entire string looked like. It was shot at 20 fps. I can get much higher fps (up to 120 fps), but sacrifice image quality above 20 fps, and don't really want to have that many images to go through. I typically only choose anywhere from 1 to 3 from a string to edit. That assumes there are any that are worth editing.

That’s a fun string to see. In the first pic it looks like the hen is getting ready to walk on the water and in the last she looks to be doing a belly flop.

Cool. Colorful. Nice work. I like 9161 best only because the bird is fully focused, but 9183 is poetic motion. Thanks.
