Mourning Dove

Post by CT_Shooter » Fri Aug 31, 2018 8:14 pm

Today, I ate the second Mourning Dove I've ever eaten, freshly harvested when it broke its neck flying into my living room window.

I've had a few bird strikes this summer, and thankfully none that were fatal until today. It hit with an amazingly loud smack. My cat rushed to the window to see what happened. So did I. I saw it lying on the ground, obviously dead, and retrieved it. I plucked it, cleaned it, and marinated it in a salt water brine for a couple of hours, then rinsed it, dried it with paper towels and placed it in the fridge for a couple of hours to thoroughly dry it. Then I dusted it with a heavy coating of cajun spices and gave it another hour to soak it all in, then roasted it in a convection oven at 375 for 20 minutes. Unbelievable! These wonderful birds are the best tasting fowl I've ever eaten.

I have many Mourning Doves in my yard at any given time and they are always safe. Hunting them in CT is prohibited. But, when one meets its Maker by speeding into my picture window, I simply thank Him for providing a little manna from heaven and totally enjoy it. 8-)

Dove season opens here tomorrow at 12 noon. But,
I'm probably not gonna be out there.

I will be. Good eating.

Our dove season opens tomorrow too. Not going dove hunting but will be in the woods at daylight. Squirrel season also opens tomorrow!

I agree. Dove is excellent eating and the hunting when the birds are thick is fast and furious. Hunted doves for many years, back in the day, when I lived in the prairie states, but up here in the north woods, not much dove hunting to be had. Not the right habitat or climate.

Went dove hunting in Kansas once with a close friend. We had a blast lots of shooting. When were were done his wife cooked them in a wine sauce receipt she had. They were like you said CT the best foul I have ever had.

I've never tasted baked mourning dove yet; have enjoyed roasted duck some years ago. Hope to have dove someday as I've heard many folk share how very tasty it is.

Your "recipe" sounds very good, CT_Shooter. Very cool that your unexpected meal was provided and delivered to your door!
