I quit smoking a pipe cold turkey years ago after watching a good friend and mentor die of lung cancer. I've been about 30 years smoke free now. Congrats on your accomplishment.

Thank you Jake, and congrats to you as well; just hope I didn't wait too long. :?
I DO feel a lot better though.

Never too late. I quit thirteen years ago after taking care of my younger Brother as he died of cancer. It started out as Liver but ended up in his lungs as well. Heavy smoker til the day he died.

I no longer miss it, but if I was told I had two weeks to live I'd go get a carton of Pall Malls.
It was like an old friend when I felt down. A deadly friend.

Never give in even for just one. I tried that thirty years ago and it led right back to the habit.

Well done Mark. I feel your pain. I didn't smoke but was dipping two tins of Copenhagen a day. Stopped in 92 when I thought I had throat cancer, turned out to be girds !

Still get a hankering now and again, but was sacred straight.

Stay strong !

Dipped Cope for a few years. Red Man plug was my favorite. Quit 'em all many years ago.

Good for you!! The first time, I lasted 6 months. The second time, it has been about 30 years now. But, it took about 10 years for the cravings to go away. I was up to two packs a day. I did something similar as you. The money that I was spending on cigarettes, I put in savings. When I thought about smoking, I did not want to stop saving to buy cigarettes. So, I continued to save. Of course, cigarettes were cheaper back then. I paid about $5 for a carton. The hardest part for me was going into a bar and not smoking. Most times, the room was filled with smoke. Nowadays, that is not an issue. At any rate, stay strong!

Thanks GFK.
Yes, it still tugs at me occasionally, but at this point, I quickly think of somehing else and that tugging goes away fast.
Was up to 2+1/2 packs a day so didn't think I stood a chance quitting. I too remember when cartons were relatively cheap, but then got to the point where I was spending so much that it might as well have been put into a funeral fund.
Not good!!
A couple medical issues also encouraged me to stop. I have a ruptured disc that requires surgery, but they won't do that yet. It is because have a DVT, ( blood clots ) in my right leg, so I'm on blood thinners and they will not do the surgery until I'm off the thinners. Call it medical limbo...I guess. :(
I will continue to stay strong and persevere. Thanks again....glad you kicked it too!

Sorry about your situation. It seems like this to will pass as well. My motivation was somewhat health related also. I did not do as well on a physical readiness test as required. So, I had to do remedial physical training (consisted of aerobic) in an effort to build up my cardiovascular system. Of course, running was involved too. So for me, the smoking had to go. As time went on, running become easier and even enjoyable, at times. But, I cycle nowadays, when I can, instead. It's enjoyable also.

The funny thing for me, I only smoked for about 6 or 7 years. Yet, the desire lingered for about 10 years. I think about a cigar or pipe from time to time. But, I have not gone down that road. Interesting how that stuff can take a hold. At any rate, I eat more vegetables now, hopefully my body may take a hold to them instead.

God speed

Yes, Nicotine is a terribly addictive thing. Doc said, smoking is probably what caused the clots.
My daily routine, is a lot of walking. Running is not good for me because Dr says its like a battering ram on my vertibrea. Also have to wear a compression stocking. Not so bad once it's on, however, putting it on is very difficult. Takes all my strength, which hurts my back. Like trying to pull a thin balloon over a watermellon......and I have thin legs :?: does seem to be helping though.

35 or so years ago I existed on a diet of Yukon Jack, JD and Jim Beam...glad I quit cold turkey when I did or I would be a long time dead by now. Addictions are no joke and everybody handles 'em different.

Seems like a smart doctor. One of my daughter's coaches die from a blood clot. She was in her 40s. She went in for a knee operation. The body is made well. But, it has its tolerances.

Congrats Mark! I would have loved to toast with you all, but I guess I missed it. Safe bet I DID have a beverage going though, either way!

I only smoked for about a year a long long time ago. When the premium brands jumped from $1.12 to $1.23 per pack I decided that was lunacy... I still occasionally (like once or twice a year have a Cuban cigar, but that’s it.
