How about 30,000yds (17 miles)? Fired from a moving platform.

How about shooting at a 525' moving target (the asteroid Dimorphos) 6 million miles from the Earth (which is also flying around in space) and hitting it within 56' of dead center? Wow!

Yes, that was impressive. But it was a guided projectile, so ballistics only got it started in the right general direction. The example I gave of 17 mile shots was pure ballistics fired from 8"x55 caliber naval guns commonly on heavy cruisers in 3 barreled turrets. MV for HE was 2800fps for a 235lb shell. The USS Canberra used those in Vietnam for fire support of troops from '65-'69. In mid '66 she was off the coast of DaNang and firing over my head. We could hear them passing like freight trains, and praying they didn't fall short of the intended target a few miles inland. Point is that the math is the same for those, as it is for a rifle.

1500 yards.... So I could shoot my 45 Colt Henry and go back the next morning and hear it hit the steel!

It’s amazing how technical long range shooting is. When I used to shoot 600 yards thankfully all I had to consider was the wind. (Other than all the normal shooting processes of course). I don’t think my dainbramged mind could handle shooting to a mile. But that’s a wonderful opportunity for those capable.

It's not only technical, it's very expensive. And the longer the range the more expensive it gets: $20,000and up. Luckily, you can get in relatively cheap (under $2000) if you do long range at the .22lr level, which generally means 200>400yds. The Ruger Precision Rimfire is an excellent low budget starter rifle. $600 for the rifle, and $500 or so for a scope. What's left over can be used for suitable range gear and ammo.

Indeed, when I was shooting mid range F Class at 600 yards I used to console myself that my fellow competitors had more money invested in just their scopes than I had in all my equipment including the reloading gear at home. Not a problem as I always considered myself a participant not a competitor and had a lot of fun shooting with them. Tried as hard as I could of course but those sharpshooters with their custom built chassis rifles supporting Nightforce scopes and more money in their bipod than my rifle.

And that doesn't count travel expenses to the matches, etc. Just as a side note the new range I posted about ain't cheap either. Membership starting at $500/year.
