Lever action collecting, the Browning BL-22

Post by North Country Gal » Thu Jun 19, 2025 5:23 pm

Third time's a charm or so they say. That's where I'm at with this newly acquired 1980 vintage Browning BL-22. So far, so good. This BL-22 is a Grade I, meaning no checkering or engraving on the receiver. Old traditional me is more than fine with that.

My first two attempts with a BL-22, though, did not end well, so once repaired, I sold/traded them and vowed never to get another one. Make no mistake, the BL-22 is a quality lever action 22, but they are known for developing feeding issues. It's not a common problem, but it is a known problem. Just my bad luck with those first two Bl-22s.

Another issue that plagues these Browning lever guns is a typically heavy trigger. When combined with the BL-22s light weight, a heavy trigger can make the BL-22 a challenge to shoot, accurately, though the little 22 lever guns are actually inherently quite accurate. This one does just fine with CB Shorts.

The good news on this 1980 vintage BL-22 is that it feeds and functions, perfectly. Action is butter smooth and sweet. It also has a relatively nice trigger for a BL-22. Putting it all, together, I enjoy loading it up with CB Shorts and having fun. Great backyard plinker.

So by now you may be asking why bother giving a BL-22 another try? Okay, the BL-22 really is a sweet handling and a fun shooting lever action 22, maybe the smallest and lightest 22 lever gun of them all. The BL-22 also has a very short lever throw of only 33 degrees and given the way the trigger travels with the lever, no finger pinch. When worn in, just a flick of your hand can cycle the action. I can go through a mag full of 22 Shorts very fast.

It may be a small thing, but I gotta say, as far as the way the you release and lock the feeding tube on a BL-22 via the tab has no equal in the 22 lever gun world. It will never work loose or move.

Scope is a vintage Browning 4x with a 3/4" tube. These were made for Browning by Redfield and are very collectible, now. Size-wise, it's a great match for a BL-22, but for the sake of shooting, I may just switch to a heavier scope to give me more leverage when working the trigger.

Yup, so far, so good.

I have not became a .22 fan yet. But, I am glad you have found one that you like! Happy shooting!

I bought mine new in 1976. I don’t target shoot with it. It has been my squirrel gun for the last 48 seasons. ( hopefully we’ll make it to 50). Could use a new scope though.

Thanks, guys.

Hey, 48 seasons with a BL-22 has me beat. Very impressive. Back in the day when I was squirrel hunting, I mostly used a Marlin 39. Also a very fine squirrel rifle.

My hunting days are long over, but I still enjoy shooting a 22 lever gun loaded with CCI Quiet or CB Shorts in the backyard. Oh, I also shoot other 22s, but the lever guns are my favorite. In addition to the Marlin and the Browning, I also shoot a Winchester 9422. Each has something going for it.

I’m a southpaw so a lever is my favorite although my bolts are far more accurate.

Same, here. When I want to shoot the tiny little groups and play the match target game, I have my Anschutz and CZ bolt guns, but I find it a hard to get sentimental and nostalgic shooting those incredible shooting machines. And that's what they are, machines.

When I pick up a lever gun, though, it takes me way back to my younger days of plinking, hunting rabbits and squirrels, wandering through the woods or just setting up some cans and having fun. Lever guns still make me feel that way after all these years.

My wife used to have a Bl 22 in the compact version. Put a decent scope on it (Nikon Rimfire 3-9x) and it was plenty accurate for her. Many a ground squirrels fell to her shooting that little beauty. Never had a feeding issue but it was a later version from around 2010 or so.

I can understand why she likes the Browning. It really is handy. It makes a nice pair with the other little Browning, the SA 22.

Everything in this post is spot on. Love the lever .22's.
