It will be a local IDPA range/club, but he's also put in a 275meter rifle range, and is offering a variety of gunsmithing services and courses for young shooters, in addition to IDPA competitions, when he gets it all up and running. I really hope he's successful, since it would be a nice boon to our small community.

IDPA is great. Something for everyone from beginner to old timer and relatively inexpensive. A few years ago I was reading about the IDPA org and the shooting sport that is offered. This is the range I read about in Ballwin, MO, a burb of St. Louis. https://www.therangestl.com/COMPETITION/IDPA.aspx It is located 250 miles east of me, otherwise I might have already checked it out.
Best for a quick recovery from surgery, and that it will allow you to then participate in building parts of the new range. It sounds like you'd enjoy doing that kind of work. Take care of yourself first.
