good day

Post by The Wiz » Thu May 10, 2018 6:41 pm

Went out today between fronts. Didn't catch anything. Didn't really care. It was just a nice day to be walking the banks and casting. A nice plus was I did not lose any tackle. The eagles did better. 2 out of 3, I believe. Tomorrow I will be trying a new bait casting reel. Should be interesting. Have not use one in about 4 decades. I foresee a few bird nests in my future. :D

understood on the bird nest .... nice to hear you had a good outing .... I have a drawer full of really nice bait casters .... its been years since I used any of them .... when I go fishing now, I use an open face spinning reel

When I go out, I usually take a baitcaster to throw ribbet frogs, and a couple fly rods... a four weight for small panfish flies, and a six weight for the larger bass flies.

With the fly rods especially, I usually don't worry if I don't catch fish every outing. Laying the flies in just perfect is a joy all it's own.

I use Abu Garcia 6500's for cat fishing. I have a Zebco 888 for my kids or when my Dad goes. I like to fish, not pick out bird nests.

I hope the birds nests stay away. It's hard to master those, even with the newer types with settings.

Good fishing to you.

A trick learned long ago to help with birds nests... get yourself a very small crochet hook, and keep it in your tackle box or fishing gear. Comes in really handy for picking the birds nests apart. Another trick is to spin the spool backwards and then put light pressure on the line and pull forward as you work the line. I had to unravel hundreds as I learned to cast the baitcaster...

But I finally got it down pat...

What's that old saying? A bad day of fishing is like good day of golf, or a mediocre day of fishing is like a bad day at the office or something like that....a good day of fishing is like a great day! Maybe that was it. :)

Finally got out. One small Crappie. Decided bait casters are not worth the trouble even though at the end I was getting the hang of it. It was a beautiful morning. I was fishing a medium size creek that flowed into a lake. I was kept entertained by a couple of beavers that would swim up stream, come back a little later with a mouthful of fresh cut grasses. They would disappear in the bank across from me and then pop out to repeat Then a foot long water snake swam by me, going up stream. That was a new one on me. Sorta brown with rings in different shades of brown ,black, and green. Not vivid at all. Then I got strafed by a bird with a pouch(King Fisher?) as I walked to this back water pond. Must have got to close to her nest. Spent about 4 hrs., got back home, pick the wife up, had some KFC, did some shopping and back home for well deserved nap. All and all, a good day.
