45/70 and IMR4198

Just bought a tub of IMR4198 to push a Sierra 300gn FNHP out of my Henry 18.4" 45/70.
Looking up load data I find the Sierra manual starting load is 45.5 gns and a max of 51gns
the IMR data shows a start load of 53.7gns and a max of 57.2gns.
All these loads listed as suitable for the Marlin1895.
Has anyone worked up loads for the 18.4" Henry with this combination?
Any advice on a suitable starting load would be appreciated.

per Nosler's recommendations, we load 51.5 gr of IMR4198 with our Nosler 300 gr 45-70 bullets .... we have found this to be a hard hitting, very accurate round .... also per their info, the load was tested in a 24" barrel so I have no clue how it would work in a rifle equipped with an 18.4" barrel

I've chronoed 45 grains ofIMR4198 at 1850 fps out of my H010 with the 300 gr Hornady. Recoil was a little more than my 60 year old body liked.Backing up and starting over-going to cut back on the throttle a little bit! 32 grs of imr4198 and a 405 Lazercast clocks at 1350fps. Seems to shoot well.Also trying 405 Speers and the 300s again starting at 36 grs and see what happens.

Here is what a friend of mine sent me. He lives in Alaska and carry's a 1895. I just bought a 010AW. So I'd start low and work up to what you are comfortable with. Do you use a recoil reducer in your rifle.

I'm sure they can be used ...looks like iMR 4198 will work for me...start at 39 grains...to 48.5 grains..that's with 405 grain Speer bullet..the case will hold 55 to 58 grains...you should go for a 96 to 98 percent powder pack...I'll settle around 47...but with shorter barrel you may not burn the 47 grains..there are a number of powders...but anything over 55 grains an you will get into compression loads...I use this gun as a carry gun when fishing or just riding in woods...so do not use a scope or care if it's the most accurate load...a load of around 43 grains is more accurate.than the 47 grain...but if I encounter a bear want a little more zip...on salmon streams an brush I carry my double in 500 NE.with 570 grain Barnes triple shock bullets....but you may only be a few feet from them..jb

I have a lyman manuel and it doesnt show those kind of loads for 405 and IMR 4198. I know different manuels show different weights but the Lyman 49th edition shows a 37 low to a 41 high. Al

After posting that I went and looked in my hornady manual and it had higher charges than the Lyman manual did. While they dont list the 405 grain they list there 350 and when comparing that to the lyman the charges were higher. Al

I shoot only OT 405gr hard cast, gc, lead bullets atop 36 grains of IMR 4198 in my Marlin 1895 CB (26" bbl). My rifle is scoped, and if I don't drink too much coffee in the morning, from a bench rest I can get 2-3" groups at 100 yds. I have worked up this recipe for Maine moose... if I ever win a permit in the Maine lottery. This is a pleasant round to shoot, so I don't flinch much during the trigger pull. I haven't chronyed this round, but I'll bet it is around 1350 FPS.

My local gun shop does not have IMR 4198 but they do stock H4198. I use it for loading 405 grain LFN bullets. Some people say they are the same powder but Hodgden load data is fairly close but not the same for the two powders.
