Journey on a road never before taken.

Post by PT7 » Thu Aug 10, 2017 10:28 am

It’s been quite a while since I’ve posted any good reads. Forum Folk have done that from time-to-time.

Today, I’m on a never-before-traveled road of my new “alone journey” since my wife Joyce passed away. For whatever reason, a poem by Robert Frost came to my mind while I was taking my morning walk. So, before I tell you of about this coming day, I’d like to share that poem. I really like Frost’s pen, which created such beautiful images through his reflections.

“The Road Not Taken”

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

I’d like to tell you of my upcoming afternoon, also “with a sigh.” I along with my two daughters and son-in-law will meet at the Ft. Leavenworth National Veterans Cemetery in KS for my wife’s burial. Although I’ve shared in such an experience as other family members or friends have been lost in the past, this is so much different since it is all about the very hurtful loss of my wife, Joyce. I never realized that grief can have such sharp edges. I walk this journey/road today, and it hurts worse than walking on broken glass with bare feet. I never imagined it could be such a deep hurt.

I’m reminded of the marriage design God had for Joyce and me, and particularly for me. As Adam reflected on the gift God gave him, Eve his wife, God’s gift is no different for me: “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” {Genesis 2:24} Since Joyce and I became one, with her passing a significant part of me has been lost. That’s my “alone journey.” But since our marriage was designed by God, held together and blessed by Him, today is also okay for me.

I (we) have a favorite photo of us together. It was taken about 5 years or so before she was diagnosed with PD. This special photo is in a frame on our dresser, and I love it! To my eyes and heart, Joyce is an exceptionally beautiful woman! :D I’d like to share this photo with you good Henry Folk on this day.

Take good care…..PT7

I'm sorry for your loss. Having recently traveled the same road I fully understand your sorrow. It may be impossible to envision but it will get easier to continue on without Joyce.

Remember the past but look to the future.

Deepest condolences to you. Sorrow is a given at your upcoming gathering with family, but may there also be some happiness as you celebrate a life well-lived.

Better advice could not be given to anyone in this circumstance.

I hope you fare well on the new journey that you have been put on.

Thank-you for sharing both the poem and your experience. With so much ugliness we see and hear about in the world, today, we sometimes forget that this is still very much a world filled with the kind of love you've shared with us, here. Truly a beautiful thing to behold.

I read one time "hearts that ache with sorrow's dart are eased by memory touch". I sincerely wish you that.

Yes, I know you know and fully understand, Gene. Earlier this week I began a grief support group offered by the hospice house, where Joyce was cared for during her final days. Your last comment about the past/future was shared with the dozen of us that attended that night. Thanks for re-affirming the need to have such a focus.

Ditchparrot, you are spot on. Today was an emotionally draining day, especially for our oldest daughter. But mixed right there with the sadness and tears, there were some joyful smiles, too. The girls are so grateful to have had such a caring and gentle Mama.

Dave, I believe the new journey will be okay. I have the hope someday of seeing Joyce again, and a really wide-spread support from dear family members, and caring church folk. As these Henry Forum comments have been penned, I also know this is a good place to be. There really is much support here!

You're welcome, NCG. When you said this "love....is a beautiful thing to behold," I cannot even imagine what my life would have been like without Joyce at my side.....she was always gently caring for me and family. It is really a "terrible love" that we shared, which also blossomed through the years --- so strong that it is hard to grasp it is lost. Thankfully, lost only in the reality that she is gone, but surely not lost in my memory. And the memories are abundant! I'm glad my story of "us together" has reminded you that such love still exists....

RR, I'm grateful for the cool word image you wrote. And thanks much for the wishes that it might be true for me. I will look for it.

It is okay, NoFlyZone....really. Don't try to "imagine the pain." God's blessing is more than sufficient to handle and heal everything! And I trust in that completely. Your reminder & blessing are very welcomed.

Squatch, your last comment (in bold) sincerely touched my "alone journey" with exactly what I needed today. Grateful.

PT7,

You and your family are still in my prayers.

That is a beautiful picture of you and your wife and your love for one another 'shines' in it.
