Black bear in the neighborhood
My neighbor had a black bear and two cubs in her driveway yesterday. I had one run across my lawn last summer.

Re: Black bear in the neighborhood
Worked for fish and game in dispatch for eighteen months before I got on with state police for my last six years.
We'd get a lot of bear calls, and the advice was standard. Don't attract them.
Don't leave pet food out.
Use metal covered trash cans, and don't leave those out in the open. Trash cans are bear buffets...
Don't feed the wildlife. (Gee, I put food out for deer, not bears... doh.)
Clean your bbq grill...
If you have a bear on your porch or close to the house....
Open a window and play music loud....
Bang pots together
Shoot the bear with a paint ball gun.
(One woman actually asked what color worked best... the Sergeant told her pink... it would embarrass him among his peers.)
Another citizen said she had tried all those things and he was STILL on the porch.
The Sergeant said, "hand him the phone, i'll talk to him." We actually heard her start for the door.
I can't print what she told the sergeant.

You can tell a lot about the character of a man...
by the way he treats those who can do nothing for him.
I don't look back at the things I can no longer do, I just look forward to the things I still can.

Re: Black bear in the neighborhood
when bear and her two cubs was mentioned in the opening post was mentioned I couldn't help but hearken back to the time I was a member of a bear hunting club for close to 10 years .... for the most part, if a black bear sees a person first, about all the person will see is bushes shaking ... that said, there are exceptions .... one of which comes into play when a momma bear perceives danger to her cubs .... having a person get between them is not a good idea .... in fact, its a very bad idea .... with them wandering around in a neighborhood, folks need to really be alert
Re: Black bear in the neighborhood
I live on what's essentially a habitat/travel corridor connecting large wooded tracts of County forest, between two lakes. It's not unusual at all to see two or three bears pass through the yard every summer. Sometimes the resident bears hang around, too. From the look of the Blackberry vines, there could be a bumper crop, so we'll be seeing them.

Just a word to the wise- don't try the same thing on the bears as you used on the rabbits.Sir Henry wrote:My neighbor had a black bear and two cubs in her driveway yesterday. I had one run across my lawn last summer.
