Revolver -- "The Citizen's Handgun"

Lately there have been several threads on revolvers with some great photos included. Thought I'd add a very good article I found a couple of years ago about the historical change from revolvers to semi-autos for LEOs. And the writer also asked, and discussed, the question, "What is a handgun for?" Personally, I like the title of the article, which I put in the subject line.

Everyone knows the debate of revolver vs. semi-auto has been around for a long time, and will continue ad infinitum. Yup, the writer does "argue" in favor of the revolver. But what I found is that his argument is laid back and kind of mellow. I liked that. In the handgun category, I've mostly had revolvers, both S/A and D/A, also a derringer. But I did own one semi-auto pistol, which was a very good, accurate, and quite reliable pistol. It was the Springfield Armory XD 9MM full-size Service Model. However, when I sold it, the replacement handgun was another revolver. I am one of those wheel gun guys.

I hope some Folk find this an interesting and maybe even an enjoyable article. I liked the photos of older revolvers, and especially the photo of the group of police officers (from a different era) aiming their revolvers. Enjoy.

That's a very down to earth view of the pro's and con's of different types of handguns, and it should be compulsory reading for anybody wanting to buy a handgun. Thanks for posting the link.

well reasoned indeed .... decades ago I chose to go with a 44 mag for hunting (black bear) and to this day it is my handgun of choice, the one that comes out of the vault most often .... a 357 is the only revolver I've ever really wanted that I haven't owned .... who knows, someday I may purchase one

Your description of "down-to-earth" kinds of says it. Like I wrote, I thought it was a "laid back and mellow" article, and that's important to me rather than being presented in a focused, combative mode. There are most always two sides of a coin, and even the edge of the coin comes up sometimes. Lots of opinions and/or preferences out there. A kicked-back, sitting-on-the-front-porch, friendly chat about what people think is more pleasant.

My son-in-law owns a security guard agency, and he and his guards all are armed with (mostly) 9MM semi-autos. Years ago, my son-in-law owned/ran another guard agency in CA. At that time, his duty carry along with others was a S&W model 10 in .38 Special. He does see the pros to a semi-auto in his business. But he regularly is on the lookout for a solid, excellent-condition model 10 frame to buy. He would like to build his own model 10 again....said he wished he never let it go. BTW, I had mentioned before that my first revolver was an SP101 .357 Magnum snubby with a 3.02" barrel and fixed sights. He went shopping with me to help/advise me on that first-time revolver buy. When we found that revolver, he told me "you'll never need anything else." Kind of agrees with the author.

Thanks for the article, PT7. Like you and many others, I also prefer revolvers, so I totally enjoyed reading the author's thoughtful and reasoned argument.
