Headache from hell..................

Post by fortyshooter » Wed Feb 18, 2026 2:07 pm

So I TRIED to start doing my taxes which is bad enough until I discover we haven't received wife's Federal Retirement Benefit Statement in the mail and it is nearing end of Feb. You call the dept. and get a recording of " do to volume of calls we can't complete your call". Try logging on the their website and that won't work cause she has changed her passwords and email address couple times but never wrote it down completely so I am locked out of that. Hopefully the damn thing will show up in the mail soon! Her stuff is a big damn mess !!!!

I too have not yet received a couple of 1099-R forms. Does the IRS require they be delivered to the taxpayer by a certain date and if so, what is that date?

As I recall all 1099’s are to be mailed by Jan 31. That was a while ago and the deadline may have changed.

Payers are required to mail Form 1099-R (including 1099-SSA) to you by January 31. But they can get around that if they are going to be late by sending you notice by Jan 31 with an expected date.

I have a few tax forms that I downloaded and printed myself. Fidelity is pretty good with that, and most banking sites also have them.

I think that if I select to "go digital" and not receive all the usual communications via USPS, that it may also include the tax forms. I prefer to have what I consider more important statements come via my mailbox, but that's not always what happens.

My federal retirement notified me back in Jan that I had to download my 1099 from the site. If you go to the OPM retirement services page online there is an option for getting your 1099 without logging in. Don't know what's required, but you might explore that.

We were notified our 1099-SSA were available for download, but we still got paper copies in the mail. Except for two, our investment 1099s had to be downloaded. One of them became available only after Jan 31. Oregon requires that we download 1099G (refund). Paper option no longer available.

I downloaded our SSA 1099’s from the website. Interesting, near the end of January they were available but with a warning that they should be double checked after Jan 01. I did that and while the info was the same the later forms were in the normal 1099 format. The earlier forms which I printed we a different format. All is good.
