.22 WMR For Coyotes?
.22 WMR For Coyotes?
Any of you folks use a .22 WMR rifle for coyote killing?
I recently got a Savage Model 93 rifle in .22 Mag and plan to use it on coyotes later when the deer season ends in South Carolina.
Coyotes are a plague on my hunt property and I attribute the reduction on my deer harvest to coyotes.

Re: .22 WMR For Coyotes?
I would think it would work at a reasonable distance, myself I just grab one of the 223's. I have an old 25-20 that I would love to poke a hole in a few with.
Haven't even seen one this season, but have a older fell a a viuple miles down that road that has been trapping for them the past couple years. So that could be part of it here.

I think my shots would not be much further than 50 yards or so.
I could use an AR but I want to experience something different.

Not sure how effective a wmr would be on a coyote sized critter. Of course a head shot would do it.
Personal experience but very different is ground squirrels. When I would hit one with a 22 lr hp sometimes they would escape down the hole but left a blood trail so I knew they were hit. After switching to wmr hp I never had one escape back down the hole. The destructive power of the wmr was pretty amazing.

Maybe I could use my Henry Single Shot in .30-30 for a different experience. Sure do like that rifle.
Sure would make follow-up shots slow if there is more than one dog.

Use the .30-30. The .22 WMR is most likely going to just wound.

Re: .22 WMR For Coyotes?
Some of the coyotes in rural Illinois can get pretty big. Personally, I would opt for my .243 (don't own a .223). I don't really think 22 mag is enough gun.

Maybe the .30-30 is a better choice. Even tho' I despise coyotes, they don't deserve a slow, painful death.

Another vote for the 30-30. I dont own one but Im in on the 243 choice out of the guns that I own.
