Henry .45-70 18.4" Moosie?

Post by Georgie Boy' Henry » Wed Aug 20, 2025 9:08 pm

How are you guys liking the 18.4" models with the side gate, are you mounting a scope, adding a set of skinner, williams or xs sights? How many of you are using this gun for moose hunting? Let's see your setups, I am torn between the 22" hard cased or the 18.4", leaning for the short barrel. Keeping it simple and adding a skinner for this year.

Sorry, no opinion on the 45-70.
Anyway, welcome to the forum!

You'll have trouble going wrong with the Skinner sights. Like Mags, I don't know the 45-70. Shot once. But, in range, the Skinner peep is hard to beat. I've taken white tail several times. My 357 is capable to 100 yards.
Good luck.

Hello & Welcome aboard. No 45-70, I'm a 444 guy through & through.
And we can't get Henry on board. so I went with a Rossi R95 for my 3rd rifle in the mighty 444.
And no Moose down here in Tenn. ;)

Welcome to the forum. I owned the longer barrel in CCH at one time but don’t anymore. It was a good shooting rifle. But I dont hunt anymore and didn’t have a use for the abuse. Good luck with your hunt.

I went and handled all the new Marlins and Henrys today and Henry is getting my money for sure, Made in America! Mauger is a joke of a company, they have been 5 years and can't get guns on the market, imagine paying double for a Mauger, they were $1000 a decade ago and now some of these gaugers want $3200 for one. I will be going with the 18.4" blued/wood, they feel better, look better and MADE IN AMERICA! They are just BETTER!....I have been a lifelong Marlin Man...that ship has sailed, what an abortion of a company they really have been for over 20 years......Ive had a few Ruger guns, average at best imo....they can keep their Maugers...This Conservative Canadian is going HENRY...MADE IN AMERICA!!!!

Glad you like your Henry .45-70. I have had a Henry .45-70 Big Boy Steel for several years - it does not have the side gate and I did add a Skinner receiver mounted peep sight.
Can't say that I share your views on Ruger firearms or the Henry Rifle Forum.

Not sure where you are getting that vibe, but we have a few rules and expected conduct. You have just crossed the line.
