New Rossi Trapper

Post by Vaquero » Sun Feb 09, 2025 9:55 am

Yep, Rossi Trapper in 444, because Henry won't make one.
It's a favorite of mine, this is the third rifle of this caliber for me.
I will say that right out of the box I was impressed with the fit and finish, and the action is as smooth as any Henry I've ever handled. The trigger is a little stiff, but it is smoothing up nicely for sure. I have no complaints or regrets.
I've tried a few rounds before this real test, it cycles, chambers, fires and ejects just like it is suppose to.
It even ejects loaded rounds and I tested this specifically because I have read where a few had issues with it.
So yesterday I stole a scope and mounts off one of the 30-30 rifles and installed on the Trapper to see if it could really shoot.. i will say it does, it only took a few rounds to get on target. I used a cast load to get that done.
I then changed to the factory Hdy 265 gr ftx ammo, I didn't adjust the scope and figured they would be higher, but at 55 yds no big deal, I was looking for group size. I only had 6 rds. left so I shot 3 and am saving the others for some 100 yd shooting at a later date.
Next up was on own personal handload that shoots quite well in one of the Marlins. I was not disappointed, they shot well, not as tight but definitely deadly. ;)
I will be carrying this bad boy to the deer woods this season.

Very nice Randy! I too am impressed with the new Rossi lever rifles in quality and how slick the action is right out the box. Love my 45-70 Trapper in "Mules Leg" configuration!

Looks good Randy. Id like to see one up close. Since gun sales right now arent all that great it might be a while before I see one unless I decided to waste 8.00 and go to a gun show here in the near future. I have no need for any of the calibers its chambered in but never hurts to look.
Don't let the old man in

Between your reviews and a guy over on MO that liked the one he has in the 444, and I regard his word like yours. ;)
Even though I have also read of a few that wouldn't eject very well, so that was one of my first tests.
I didn't need another but, what's that ever had anything to do with anything.
It'll make for one heck of a woods walker, 4-wheeler riding, or just a good ole truck gun. ;)
I'm ordering a hammer spur and a rear barrel blank, just in case I can find some lower rings.

Randy, That looks like a well made rifle and there doesn't seem to be the worthless crossbolt safety. What about muzzle blast with the short barrel?

That's a fine looking carbine.

Thanks, buddy.
But, it does have the CBS  I forgot to mention in the above post, but I'll be adding one of the safety deletes also in my order to RPP.
I need to shoot it at dusk and check that out. I have some H335 and I've read where it will produce a nice flash.
I'll see about trying to get a pic. ;) :D

I have a Remlin 1894 in .44 Rem. Mag with a cross bolt safety and it doesn't bother me that much. I occasionally use it in addition to the half-cock safety where leaving a deer stand at the end of a hunt so that I have a loaded carbine until I get back to the truck. That said, I have an old Glenfield 30A which does not have the CBS and I sure don't miss it (the CBS that is). It seems we survived without a CBS for a century but the lawyers know better than we do, I guess. I guess they cover firearms design pretty heavy in law school.

Wow, I like the cast loads. Somehow, I ended up with dies for 444.... now I need to consider one of these

Beautiful rifle. It sure looks like Rossi has stepped up their game. Enjoy!
