Grey Wolf and Coyote

I just saw the largest wolf I’ve ever seen run across my property. People tell me wolves and coyotes don’t live in the same area but I see both on a regular basis. And yes I know the difference although sometimes it’s hard to tell because we also have coywolves which are sometimes referred to as Great Lakes Wolves.

With wildlife, my motto is "never say, never". Hey, coyotes and wolves are very intelligent, but they don't read books, so they sometimes go where the books say they shouldn't.

Seriously, though, they might be at the edge of their territory, one or both, so that could explain why you are seeing both. Of course, only they would know those boundaries.

And territories change over time. We used to have a lot of coyotes in our neighborhood, but now very few coyotes. Instead, we have red fox. If you've never heard red fox calling at night, it is a very different call than coyotes.

No wolves around here, coyotes and yes Red fox.
I remember the first time we heard them, we weren't sure what it was.
One afternoon I heard close by the house and down towards the barn.
So I eased down that way and caught it crossing the small field behind the barn.
By the noise, I was sure it was some kinda cat, until that day.

We've had a bobcat hanging around. Seeing/hearing coyotes now is rare.

The wolves and coyotes have been breeding together creating a combination. Further south and east they look more like a coyote and further north into Canada they look more like a wolf. This is the only known area they have interbreed.

The coyotes in the area sure don’t look like coyotes I’ve seen elsewhere.

I would not be surprised at that. The coyotes we see around here are larger than the coyotes I saw growing up in Nebraska.
