Buckhorn sights.

I just received my new H024-3030 rifle and am getting ready to hit the range next week. I'm concerned about the ability to adjust the factory buckhorn enough to sight it in. FWIW, I also have a Henry Steel 45-70 lever and wasn't able to lower the Buckhorn sight enough even to get on target at 25 yards. I even removed the adjustment ramp. No soap... I ended up scoping the rifle and ditching the buckhorn entirely.

I do have a question though... The white diamond marked slide That slides/fits/locks in the buckhorn, can I grind a bit of it's lower edge to allow it to sit lower in the buckhorn? Are there any other tricks or modifications that will allow me to get it sighted in with the buckhorn sight?

If I can't get the buckhorn sighted in I'm considering going with Skinner's barrel mounted peep sight. I don't want a receiver mount as I like the handsome brass receiver unfettered with a sight/scope/red dot. The Skinner barrel mount also allows one to retain the existing front sight too. Any tricks, suggestions or opinions on it?

You could grind the insert some as long as the side set screw can still lock it in place. Just be aware that the insert is flip-able. One end up is a V notch and other end up is a U. By grinding you'll destroy which ever notch you're not using.

Some have reported that Henry sights each rifle in at the factory, which isn't true. I talked with them this AM and they only fire it to ensure it fires OK, nothing to do with sighting. Hopefully I won't need to grind the slide. If I do it won't be too much. Fingers crossed...

That's correct Henry does not sight in new rifles. They do a quick sight in when a rifle is returned for repair due to inaccuracy and sight related issues.

When I got my H009 years back, it was shooting high at 50 yards. After contacting Henry, I realized the diamond insert was adjustable. After adjusting the insert, I was hitting close to POA. I have replaced the buckhorn with a peep sight seen then. And, I am happy with the POI at 100 yards.

Receiver: Ranger Point Precision. But, there are other brands that may work better. I have maxed out windage. I went with RPP initially because of a clover leaf type peep. But, I did not get the desired POI. So, I replaced that peep sight with a traditional one. The POI is much better.

I was able to use the OEM front sight. As I recall, that may be why I went with RPP also. Yet, the peep sight seems to be a good way to go.

I think buck horn sights are kinda stupid...........Those big ears block out a lot of target.......I grind/file all mine flat with the bade notch.
