Cicada concert is playing

Post by GunnyGene » Tue May 07, 2024 4:35 pm

Our 13 year brood hatched out last nite. Something between 500,000 and one million per acre. I have 20 acres and I'm in the middle of the zone in the MS county map below.

My first thought was Tinnitus. I get to listen to a concert of crickets and cicadas any time I am awake. I actually sit outside in the evenings and listen to the real crickets sometimes to help drown out my inner ones. We should be hearing the cicadas up this way in the next month or so.

I found this guy hanging on my front window this morning. There are two ponds close by and I hear all kinds of noises coming from it in the summer.

I was actually hoping there might be a few around here. They look like they might make good macro photography subjects. I remember seeing a few in Fla when I was growing up.

If you have a forested spot near by - preferably hardwoods - that's where they'll be.

I'll probably be in the woods tomorrow morning with the new camera. I will keep my eyes and ears peeled.

Here's a interractive map which shows where the broods will come out in S.C. and around the country. You might have to drive inland quite a ways from Summerville. Also some useful info from the USDA/FS. Watch the temperature for the brood areas. They usually will hatch when you have consistent temps in the upper 70's low 80's.

We have tree frogs here to serenade us. They were very noisy for a while.

We are on the edge of the hatch so I am not expecting much. I remember as a kid we had a pretty big hatch one summer and the noise was disturbing. My condolences.

Ours hit hard back in '95. I was working at a 200 acre farm at the time and late in the day, it was just me and the millions of them. If you are outside and feel a tickle on the back of your neck, get ready to swipe him off, lol. The next hit was 2012. That was a light year. Our next one will be in 2029. Our cycle is every 17 years.

I was in training years ago at Millington TN. The cicadas were in full concert form. One morning after a run I saw a squirrel catch a live cicada and eat it. I thought squirrels were vegetarians.

None of them around here yet. We get some every summer mostly in mid June-July when it is hot and humid!

I spent several hours at Magnolia yesterday. Didn't hear a peep from any of the little critters.

I did hear some very loud squealing from the other side of the lake. Don't know if it was a disagreement among some feral hogs, or maybe a big gator wanted bacon for breakfast.
