My mother was in the Navy when she was a young Lass... and the Duke was filming a war picture where his character flew a fighter through a hanger. Mom and a bunch of the other Sailors on the base walked to the flight line to watch the filming of that scene and she leaned on the fence along the flight line to observe. She took her place next to a tall Navy Officer in a flight suit, leather jacket and Officer's fore and aft cap.

"Wow," my excited mom gushed, "Flying a plane through a hanger... John Wayne can do anything."
The tall officer leaned over and whispered in her ear.
"Why I thank you ma'am, but even if "I" could FLY a plane, I wouldn't be dumb enough to fly one through a hanger."
Yup, the Duke was watching along with everyone else, but in that Flight Suit and Leather Jacket blended right in.

Yes, she got his autograph, quietly, so as not to draw attention. Lost it in one of her moves.
You can tell a lot about the character of a man...
by the way he treats those who can do nothing for him.

I don't look back at the things I can no longer do, I just look forward to the things I still can.

I enjoyed that clip. I normally don't want to hear what hollywood types have to say off the screen, he was a rare exception for me.

Carol was a downtown attorney in Minneapolis when I met her and one of her friends was a Psychiatrist. One day she was describing me to her friend over coffee and the dear doctor said that the morals and values she was describing were John Wayne's. I consider that to be one of the highest compliments I've ever received.

Too bad I don't look like him. I'm just a short little toad.

This isn't really me, but it would be what I would look like beside him.

Vaquero, & Cooperhawk,

I'm sorry for this "mini-hijack" here. But when I saw the pic of "Not Cooperhawk" and John Wayne together (You DON'T look like a "short little toad, Cooperhawk...... Mr. Wayne was pretty tall.....), it reminded me of this guy's (James Fridman) photoshop work like this.......

This guy does all sortsa funny photoshopping per folks' requests. Again, I somewhat apologize for this post being off topic. Sometimes, my warped sense of humor takes over my brain..... :o

No problem Jimmie, all comments are welcome.
And I agree about wishing those values were taught more today.

I don’t know if he gambled, I am sure he was a boozer, but he doesn’t appear to have been crazy about other vices like the Rat Pack was.

Dean Martin wasn't the party animal that the rest of the Rat Pack was.
He liked spending time with the family and generally went to bed early.
I read where his was wife was much more of a party person.
Once she was having a party at the house, it got so loud that Dean actually call the cops to complain.
He pretended a be a neighbor rather than himself. ;)
