Sound that made me think Saturday night.....

During the night hours while watching news updates and video on Ukraine I noticed booming sounds like rolling thunder coming from outside.
I step out in the darkness and hear it in the distance trying to figure what it might be coming from. It was the military about 35 miles away at Fort Pickett doing live fire with tanks and artillery training. Sounds of freedom! https://youtu.be/bnpuvvHe_ko

Love hearing artillery, as long as it’s outgoing. Incoming, not so much.

I'm not surprised the units are clearing their throats. I'd expect to see the skies more crowded with training flights overhead here. The air guard is a few miles up the road.

We get a lot of helicopter flyover during the day and evening plus a couple of those tilting wing Osprey copters sometimes. Those make the air pulse around you weird!

The Navy training center is nearby us. We hear the T-6 Avengers flying quite often. They are a turbo prop with a very cool sound and they are fast

One of my squadrons in the Corps was the first fleet Tilt Rotor squadron. I had left the Corps on a medical discharge by then, but I knew a lot of the Marines who went thru transition training for the V22. It had a rough first few years, but from what I hear is a good aircraft. Most of my 13 years were spent on 46s and 53s.

Last year Love of my Life and I had the experience of spending a three day weekend in a cabin on Onslow Beach, Camp Lejeune. The Marines were training all three nights. Tanks, artillery, boats, and Helicopters. During the days it was quiet and when leaving or returning to the beach we would see the troops moving in the fields and trails and roadways. At night we never saw the boats, helicopters, and tanks. But we definitely heard them. One of the training areas was very close to the beach. With a swampy area and a canal between us and them. We would hear the artillery and tank fire mostly in the distance. But once in a while they would be close enough to shake the cabin and rattle the windows. Love of my Life wasn’t fond of the close ones. But she did love the sound of freedom over all. It was definitely a weekend to remember.

With over 13 years on active duty, I was stationed at New River Air Station several times during my career, and am familiar with Onslow Beach. During heavy training cycles I was often involved in the Air Ops and I loved the sounds of Freedom. In fact, during my time there, the Commanding Officer of the Air Station added a sign to the entrance that read:

Pardon our Noise
It's the Sound of Freedom.

I loved it.

We have a place up near the Canadien border that is in an area of lots of steep narrow valleys and moderately high mountains. The Air Force and Navy (I think) fly fighter training runs up and down these valleys. It’s so cool to be there and out of nowhere here comes a fighter screaming up the valley maybe a hundred feet above the ground. We use to hear sonic booms once and a while but haven’t heard one for a few years. Once and a while we will see one of the big transports flying low too.

Yep, the sound of freedom indeed!

In 1972 as newlyweds Love of my Life and I lived in a duplex abut 300 yards past the end of the runway of Naval Air Station Oceana. The F4 Phantoms rattled the entire house. We quit putting things back on the shelves after the first couple of weeks.
Over the years there have been complaints and attempts by groups of new residents to have the Navy reduce flight operations there. So far all they have accomplished is to encourage the long time residents to buy more bumper stickers, hats, shirts, and anything else that can have I love the sound of freedom printed on it.
