Is there light at the end of the tunnel?

Post by clovishound » Sun Jan 30, 2022 9:29 am

Was at Sprtsman's Warehouse the other day, and they had an assortment of powder on the shelves. Not just one or two, but perhaps a dozen different powders. Universal, H335, Varget and more. Prices were higher than what I'm used to, but not crazy. Mostly around $40 a pound.

Unfortunately, no primers.

Ive seen the same that powder seems to be more readily available in limited types, primers are still a far and few between. Good time to stock up on powder for the next dry spell.

There was a lot more powder types available at Midway and I am starting to get notifications about bullets after a year. Now if they will just unload the ship that has a Winchester 92 I am waiting to buy.

Yesterday I was in a big store which is an independent store not a chain store and they had a bunch of powder but it looked to be mostly shotgun. There was several pounds of Unique which is the only power they had that I have experience with. Lots of Accurate but I’m not familiar with the different types so not sure what it was. Lots of Hornady and other brands of bullets. I was looking for .312 XTP’s and none were available nor did the store have a spot on the shelf for them. Lots of 38, 41, 44, 9mm Hornady bullets.

Also an incredible amount of ammo other than rimfire. This is a opening of a store who just moved into a new building and I’m wondering if they held back on products for the big move.

There is a light yes, not at LGS but online sources are usually in stock. Unfortunately there's generally a 2 pound limit so not worth shipping/HAZMAT fee. Haven't found 8 pound jugs in stock anywhere.

Hey Hatchdog, There are 2 Accurate powders I have used for 25 years, and I rate them as "Very Good".

Accurate #9 is a pistol powder that I use for reloading .44 Mag for both my S&W Model 29 Classic and my Henry .44 Mag BBB. It is consistent and provides good accuracy at 50 yds. with the revolver and 75 yards with the BBB.

Accurate 2520 is for me, a universal rifle powder. I use it for my ancient Savage Model 99 in .303 Savage, numerous .30-06 bolt action rifles, an M1 Garand. and a model 1899 .30-40 Krag carbine. Turns out that in .30-06 it is a fine powder for longer range shooting, i.e., 250 -300 yds. My most used .30-06 reload is 47 grns of AA 2520 below a Hornady 165gr Interlock BTSP bullet. With my scoped rifles and calm winds, I can shoot 5" groups at 300 yds. With the Garand and '03 Springfield (mfg 1918) I drop down to 45 grs of AA 2520 simply because I want to "take it easy" with the Garand's operating rod, and the '03's barrell.

I love accurate #9 in my 41 mags. Like we all know , we can have all the powder , brass, and bullets our little hearts desire, but without primers we have nothing. Sometimes that light at the end the tunnel is a train coming at us.

Thanks Pitchman, if I see any #9 I grab some for future load development. Great info.

Well, I saw some 8 lb jugs on the shelf at SW along with the 1 lb containers. I don't remember what powder they were, but didn't have a couple hundred I was willing to spare, even if they were something I was interested in. With the short supply of primers, powder is not my bottleneck on reloading.

The Pup is no longer as interested in shooting as much, although she still enjoys going to the range from time to time. I ,therefore, don't have the need for as much ammo as I once did. She is more interested in taking pictures these days. I'm all for anything she is interested in that is even remotely interesting to me. Having said that, I still remember suffering through My Little Pony, and He Man movies when she was younger. The sacrifices we make as parents!
