Chair Peak

I was out of the house at 6:05 am and arrived at the trailhead at 7:35 am. By 11:30 I was in the chimneys and back at the car at 2:30 pm. I started at 3,064 feet and my high point was 5,800+ feet. The summit is at 6,238 feet.

This picture was taken at around 4,400 feet and shows Chair Peak to the high point on the right. I don't think you can see the actual summit as its back another 1,000 feet and maybe a couple hundred feet higher.

I stop for some huckleberries and then continue on.

My first peek at the chimney I will need to climb. Its the one on the left where you see two close together.

But first I need to climb this talus field. Its hard to tell direction but this is looking up.

The red numbers are my high points. The point 4 on the drawings and pictures are of the next route I might attempt.

I'm starting to get near the difficult part.

The first chimney is the easiest route according to my book but it was published in the late 60's. There was a big rock that had fallen and lodged in the chimney making it a Class 5 climb. The left chimney was a Class 3 according to the book and the right was a Class 4. The second photo was taken looking down from where the left was taken.

Since both chimneys were not possible without ropes I decided to take the couloir to the south shoulder (3). It was a no go also. Both pictures were taken from the same point but the second one shows more above. It sure changes the perspective.

BTW, what is a "talus field?" It sure doesn't look too stable, nor very easy to navigate that incline.

A talus field is just big rocks that have fallen to form a "frozen" rock water fall. It is generally stable but the whole field can slide at times. The higher you go on a talus field it become more scree like. Scree is just smaller rocks.

And good for you to be in condition to go on 'hikes' like that!

I did mountaineering for several decades when I was younger. What I found out on this climb was while my lower body had the strength to climb my upper body, especially my forearm grip was not up to par. Since I seem to have problems finding people that can meet on time I'm going to continue to climb solo.
