LR308 Range day

Post by Headhog » Wed Aug 11, 2021 5:04 pm

Well I originally planned to go to the range with my DPMS LR308 on Monday. I was low on ammo so instead I reloaded and change to today for shooting. So today I get to the range set a target at 100 yds and go back to load up. It hot but at least I have the rifle range to myself.

Load 5 rounds in a magazine and settle the scope on the bullseye. Squeeze off the first round and look for the hit. Eleven o'clock in the 9-10 ring. I'm happy but something didn't feel right. There was no trigger reset. So I tilt the rifle to the left to see into the ejection port and the bolt is partially closed and a round is jammed on the feed ramp. Then I looked closer and the spent cartridge is still in the chamber.

So I clear the gun and carefully manage to get the fired round out of the chamber. Everything looks normal, but just to be safe I pull the bolt carrier group and look in the chamber and down the barrel. All is fine. So now let's try this again. After firing second round same results.

Again I clear the gun and pull the bolt. This time I inspect the face of the bolt. Low and behold the claw of the extractor is missing. Then I see the small sliver of steel on the bench carpet. The entire extractor claw just broke and sheered off. Well 2 rounds and my shooting day was over.

I just wasn't supposed to shoot the LR308 this week.

Bummer. I’ve had the same thing happen with all kinds of firearms. I bet I’ve broken a dozen extractors in my life.

So where did the second round hit? You can’t keep us in suspense like this. :o :)

At least you found the issue quickly. Not a bad fix.
Remember, it's not how many guns you have. It's how many bullets you have.

The second round hit at 4 o'clock in the 10 ring. I really didn't look until I walked down range to pick-up my target stand. At that point I was more interested in the function issue.

Fortunately Midway had the extractors in stock. I hope it's a better extractor than the original which looks like a MIM part. Brownell's also has the extractor, but they are getting 4 times the Midway price. Must be made from some rare earth metal???

Thanks Forty. Fortunately it is an easy fix and just so I have a back-up, I did order 2. They were only $14.58 each. It took me longer to order the part than it will to put the new one in.

Fixed the LR308 with the extractor I received from Midway USA. Two minute job to replace the extractor. Should be all better now and hopefully this version of the extractor will hold up better. This one says it is nickel steel and we will give it a test on my next range trip. Below is a picture of the old extractor and the new. I circled the broken claw in red.

Randy, I like to roll my own. I've owned this rifle since 2014 and I don't believe It's ever had a factory round thru it. My pet loads are usually a 150 gr. boattail bullet backed up with IMR 4895 or 4064. Right now I have a lot of 4064 so that's in my current loads.
